World Language

The goal of the District 102 World Language Program (Grades 7 & 8) is to develop a student’s ability to communicate in a language other than English in real life situations and to move confidently in another culture. During the entire year, students' ability to comprehend and speak the language is strengthened by listening to conversational situations recorded by native speakers. Culture, an important part of language, is included in every lesson. Students will develop higher-order thinking skills as they compare and contrast their culture with that of the language making new connections and understanding and appreciating different communities of the world.

Spanish is introduced in grades 7-8, and lessons are taught almost completely in the Spanish aligned to student learning targets and to the Realidades curricular program. Language is introduced by means of realistic dialogues and communicative exercises. In eighth grade, students will take a Spanish proficiency assessment and will be placed in an appropriate course of Spanish at Stevenson High School.
