Grades

Assignments: Homework will be given on a regular (this does not mean daily) basis in this class. Not every assignment will be due the following day. Some assignments will take more time, thought and observation to complete. Unfinished classwork and labs should be completed as homework.

Responsibility: Homework should be written down in the student handbook daily. Students should double check the assignments on teacher's websites and/or Google Classroom daily as well.

Accountability: All assignments must be completed.

Communication: It is the student's responsibility to speak with the teacher if there are extenuating circumstances preventing them from completing the assignment on time.

Excused absences: The due date for assignments that were missed will be extended for a reasonable amount of time so that the student can get caught up.

Grades in this class are weighted as follows:

Assessments (20%): Unit Tests and major quizzes

Labs (40%): The bulk of our work, this reflects only work assigned to be done in class--not homework (unless the student did not finish in class)

Projects (20%): Typically one per unit, some are in class collaborative assignments and some are independently completed at home

Class Work (15%): For class assignments and activities that aren't labs

Homework (5%): Mainly consists of math practice and class notes

Formative Assessments (0%): Frequently given pretests and check-in quizzes that let me know what students still need to learn and drive my instruction

Upgrades: Editing assignments and revising work is an important part of the learning process. Some assignments in this class are available to be “upgraded” and students are strongly encouraged to do so.

Class Work: Most classwork assignments are not available for upgrade.

Homework: Notes may be resubmitted as many times as necessary to receive full credit. Most other homework assignments are not available for upgrade.

Assessments: Assessments are not available for upgrade. Please see test correction policy below.

Lab Investigations: Lab Investigations may be upgraded ONE TIME each.

Unit Projects: Most projects are not available for upgrade.

Late work:

Late work is accepted in this class. In most cases, all unit work is accepted until the unit test. Late work is typically accepted with no penalty to the student’s grade. However, abuse of this policy could result in a revised agreement between the student, parent/guardian and teacher that may include a penalty for late assignments.

Signed/Corrected Tests:

Students receiving a score below 80% on a test are required to have the test signed by a parent or guardian. Test retakes are not available in this class. Instead, students receiving a score below 80% are encouraged to complete test corrections. Students may use these corrections to raise their grade on the test to 80%. Corrections MUST be accompanied by a signature in order to be accepted for credit.
