Historical and social Sciences Analysis Skills
The intellectual skills noted below are to be learned through, and applied to, the content
standards in grade six. Students will demonstrate the following intellectual, reasoning, reflection, and research skills:

World History and Geography:
Ancient Civilizations
Students in grade six expand their understanding of history by studying the people and events
that ushered in the dawn of the major Western and non-Western ancient civilizations. Geography
is of special significance in the development of the human story. Continued emphasis is placed
on the everyday lives, problems, and accomplishments of people, their role in developing social,
economic, and political structures, as well as in establishing and spreading ideas that helped
transform the world forever.
Standard 1: Students describe what is known through archaeological studies of the early
physical and cultural development of mankind from the Paleolithic Era to the agricultural
revolution.
Standard 2: Students analyze the geographical, political, economic, religious, and social
structures of the early civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Kush.
Standard 3: Students analyze the geographic, political, economic, religious, and social structures
of the ancient Hebrews.
Standard 4: Students analyze the geographic, political, economic, religious, and social structures
of the early civilizations of ancient Greece.
Standard 5: Students analyze the geographic, political, economic, religious, and social structures
of the early civilizations of India.
Standard 6: Students analyze the geographic, political, economic, religious, and social structures
of the early civilizations of China.
Standard 7: Students analyze the geographic, political, economic, religious, and social
structures during the development of Rome.
SOCIAL STUDIES
The Sixth Grade Social Studies Curriculum focuses on the development of culture and early civilizations based on the State and District Standards. Throughout the year, students will study the following topics, subjects, people and cultures:
Geography
Archaeology
Early Humans
Early Civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt and Kush
Ancient Israel & Hebrews
Ancient India
Ancient China
Ancient Greece
Ancient Rome
The civilizations will be studied using a variety of activities, readings, simulations and the History Alive! textbook and workbook by the Teacher’s Curriculum Institute. In addition, a variety of supplemental textbooks, videos and materials will be used.
Students will participate in numerous activities and simulations designed to enhance their understanding of what life was like in these early civilizations. Students will complete research projects and reports as well as group, partner and individual activities designed to develop strong teamwork, communication and collaborative skills. Every Social Studies Unit culminates with a Unit Test and an Ancient Civilization Postcard Project.
