Tryouts will take place at the end of October as our student-athletes participate in two days of rigorous skills, drills, and scrimmaging.
However, before you even step on the court you MUST have an updated sports physical on file in order to participate in tryouts. This is non-negotiable. Sports physicals are good for one year and then must be updated. If you are not sure if your physical is up to date, please contact your physician or the FMS school nurse.
Tryouts will be held in both the morning and afternoon. You must attend all tryout days to be considered for the team!
AM Tryouts: morning tryouts begin at 6:30 am, however, it would be a good idea to arrive 5-10 minutes early in order to stretch and warm up. Please enter through door 10 on the north side of the school off Lincoln Street. At 7:45 tryouts will end and you will have 15 minutes to get cleaned up before school begins. Please bring clothing to change into as you will be working up quite a sweat at tryouts.
PM Tryouts: afternoon tryouts will take place after school and will start at 3:00 pm. Please change right after you are released from your last class of the day and get to the gym to stretch and warm up. Tryouts will end at 5:00 pm and you exit through door 10 if you are being picked up by a parent or guardian.
Each team will hold a minimum of two days of tryouts. Depending on the number of athletes trying out, coaches may make a first round of cuts before making final cuts on the last day. After the last day of tryouts, coaches will post their rosters in the small gym after school and then hold a brief 5-10 minute meeting to share some important information for those that made the team.
Unfortunately, we are only allowed one team per grade which will be made up of a minimum of 10 players that prove themselves to be the best basketball players on the court during the 2-3 days of tryouts. If you DO NOT make the team, it is not the end of the world. You have plenty of opportunities to play basketball year-round, improve your game, and get ready for tryouts next year and in high school.
However, if you would like to talk to either coach about why you did not make the team, YOU, the student are more than welcome to talk to us in person. All we ask is that you wait one day after the roster is posted to find Coach Reder or Coach Rovik and have a meeting about tryouts and what you can work on to improve your game.
