Alternative Pigment projects by grade 8 students, Emma B and Jeremy J
The COVID19 pandemic has us finding new ways to create art and connect with one another. Grade 6 will have trimester rotations and Grades 7 &. 8 will resume semester rotations in Visual Art this year. Visual Art students are going to create some amazing art this year!
Students in Grade 8 experiment with alternative pigments found in nature. Prior to gathering specimens, students studied plant identification, to include toxic plants, such as poison ivy.
I am posting the work from last year so that you can see the digital slide shows by each class and the National Junior Art Honor Society.

Thinking of Art lessons? Here are some tips to find a teacher who is right for you:
how far do you want to drive--do you want to stay in your community or drive to the city?
what does the Art teacher or studio provide? Are they a mix of experimenting with different types of media; do they just do painting or ceramics?
Ask around about the style of teaching. Does the teacher take the brush from your hand and paint on your canvas or does the teacher demonstrate options on an alternative surface?
Does the studio compete and exhibit work? If so, are you obligated to submit work for competition or can you create art for "Art's sake?"
Are you expected to maintain a sketchbook and work outside of class or is work limited to class time?
Although we cannot endorse any programs, here is a list of local Art programs:

Mindfulness through Mandalas of Tibet
by Jayda Domenech (left)
by Julia Pytka (right)
Students in Grade 7 completed symmetrical designs in Art that were created in the style of Mandalas of Tibet. Mandalas are created by Buddhist Monks as an exercise in mindfulness. Buddhism is technically a philosophy; however, is often referred to as a religion. There is an emphasis on process in making a mandala as a physical act. The Monks will take several days to construct the mandalas with intricate patterns using colored sand. In the end, the Mandala is deconstructed and returned to the earth. This is a reminder that our time on earth is temporary and that we are all ultimately all the same. Selected mandalas created with marker on paper are on exhibit in the lobby window gallery.

Welcome to Visual Art at Joseph L. McCourt Middle School Our Visual Art program is an opportunity for students to express themselves and learn a variety of skills. Through critiques, students create complex works of art and designs that are personally meaningful. Below is an overview of the exciting creative experience available to McCourt students.
In 6th Grade, we explore techniques in design, drawing, 3-Dimensional Design, and Ceramics.
In 7th Grade, we build on the skills from 6th grade and apply them to more complex forms of art. Such projects include maskmaking in plaster and still-life drawing.
In 8th grade, we prepare students for high school level art by focusing on more complex skills. Students learn how to create a block for printmaking on a printing press and complex methods of attachment and form in Ceramics.
Students exit the middle school art program with the skills necessary to be successful at the high school level in Visual Art 1.
Students can check Google Classroom for assignments.
We are looking forward to another great year together!
Respectfully,
Carolyn M. Dooley
