    • September 2020: start of R03 (NIDCR) grant: “A high-throughput, in vitro screening system for treatments of oral mucositis in cancer.”

    • AY 2020-2021 was a big year for the lab, which in this time period published 8 peer-reviewed research articles from primary projects in the lab, or through collaborations. Congratulations to everyone on good results of hard work!

    • Congratulations to Dr. Van Lam for successfully defending her Ph.D. thesis, April 20th, 2021, titled "Classification of Cancer Cells Using Digital Holographic Microscopy and Machine Learning to Predict Disease-Relevant Behavior." Well done!

    • May 2019: start of R03 (NIBIB) grant: “A dual-modality quantitative phase and polarized light microscope to assess cell motility and extracellular matrix remodeling during invasion.”

    • March, 2019: The manuscript, "Machine Learning with Optical Phase Signatures for Phenotypic Profiling of Cell Lines", was accepted for publication in the journal Cytometry A. Congratulations to Van Lam and all co-authors. Featured "In this Issue", volume 95.

    • September, 2018: The manuscript, "Oral Mucosa-on-a-Chip to Assess Layer Specific Responses to Bacteria and Dental Materials" was accepted for publication in the journal Biomicrofluidics, and was further selected as Editor's Pick, a designation given by the journal editors to articles they feel noteworthy. Congratulations to former CUA undergraduates/Master's students and co-authors Chris Rahimi, Ben Rahimi, and Dominic Padova, as well as co-authors Seyed Rohoolghodos (CUA PhD candidate, Mechanical Engineering), Diane Bienek, PhD and Gil Kaufman, PhD (American Dental Association Foundation), and Xiaolong Luo, PhD (CUA Mechanical Engineering).

    • December, 2017: The journal paper, Quantitative assessment of cancer cell morphology and movement using telecentric digital holographic microscopy" has been accepted in Cytometry A. Congratulations to Van Lam and all co-authors!

    • December, 2017: From a collaboration, the journal paper "Electrical Programming of Soft Matter: Using Temporally Varying Electrical Inputs to Spatially Control Self Assembly" has been accepted in Biomacromolecules. Congratulations to all co-authors!

    • September, 2017: The journal paper "Magnetic nanoparticle-loaded alginate beads for local micro-actuation of in vitro tissue constructs" has been published in Colloids and Surfaces B: Biointerfaces. Congratulations to Awatef Alshehri and all co-authors!

    • July 12th, 2017: The lab hosted 10th-11th grade-students from the College Board's Upward Bound program, from local Anacostia, Ballou, and Woodson High Schools for a tour and visit. The students asked some great questions!

    • June, 2017: The journal paper "Noninvasive assessment of articular cartilage surface damage using reflected polarized light microscopy" has been published in the Journal of Biomedical Optics. Congratulations to Ruby Huynh and all co-authors!

    • April, 2017: The commentary "Holography, machine learning, and cancer cells" has been published in Cytometry A.

    • Current PhD students Ruby Huynh and Van Lam presented talks at and published conference proceedings papers of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society conference (Orlando, FL, August 16-20, 2016) and the SPIE Photonics West conference (San Francisco, CA, Jan 28-Feb 2, 2017), respectively. Congratulations to Ruby, Van and co-authors!

    • January, 2017: From a collaboration, the journal paper "Development of a custom biological scaffold for investigating ultrasound-mediated intracellular delivery" has been e-published in Materials Science and Engineering, C. Congratulations to Loan Bui and all co-authors!
