Responding to the tragic lynching of three African American men on June 15, 1920, Duluth residents created the Clayton Jackson McGhie Memorial Committee in June of 2000. This group worked hard and in October of 2003 the First Street memorial was dedicated. Realizing that their work was not done and that education was a key to fostering a culture where such a tragedy would never again occur, the committee created the Clayton Jackson McGhie Memorial Scholarship, making its first award in 2005.
The Clayton Jackson McGhie Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance to students of the Duluth/Superior area in order that they can pursue their goals of higher education. Clayton Jackson McGhie Memorial, Inc. awards an annual $1500 scholarship to a graduating senior in the Duluth/Superior area (Douglas, Carlton or southern St. Louis counties) who will attend an accredited, non-profit technical school, community college or four- year university (public or private) in the fall following their senior year .
