Game Recap: Downers Grove South Sophomores vs. Leyden
The Sophomore Mustangs defeated Leyden 14-7. After Leyden opened the game with a long touchdown pass, the Mustang defense tightened up and did not allow another point. The offense controlled the game on the ground, sustaining long drives and dominating time of possession.
Will Mouser scored early in the second quarter to tie the game. In the third quarter, PJ O'Donoghue intercepted a pass that set up a long Mustang drive capped by a Luke Potter touchdown. Will Mouser sealed the game with a 4th quarter interception. With the win, the Mustangs improve to 4-4 and look to finish the season strong in Friday’s matchup against the Morton Mustangs in Berwyn.
Players of the Game
Offensive Player of the Game: Emmett Hayes — Anchored the offensive line that controlled the clock and powered the Mustangs’ ground game throughout the contest.
Defensive Player of the Game: Emmanuel Robinson — The freshman defensive lineman continued his impressive season, making key plays rushing the passer and holding his gap responsibilities.
Special Teams Player of the Game: Joseph Belcastro — A consistent contributor on both kickoff and kick return units, Joseph’s effort and execution stood out once again this week.
Teammate of the Week: Red Chua — Though he did not find the end zone, Red ran hard all game and provided excellent blocking, helping drive the offense’s success.
The team earned a dominant 35-0 victory this week! Zay Smith opened up the scoring early in the first half with a forced fumble and recovery for a touchdown, setting the tone for the game. Defensively, the team was outstanding—allowing only two first downs the entire game, adding a safety, and creating a total of five takeaways. Defensive Players of the Game were Zay Smith and Cole Guzlas for their relentless effort and playmaking.
On offense, the unit delivered its best performance of the season, putting up 28 points and consistently moving the ball. Quarterback Jesse Flakus led the charge, throwing three touchdown passes to three different receivers—Landyn Anderson, Thomas Knagge, and Jordan Koestner. A special shoutout also goes to Luke Bartlett, who selflessly transitioned from starting defensive tackle to offensive guard this week and stepped up tremendously in his new role.
Week 8 for the freshman Bomb Squad brought Willowbrook back to Mustang stadium, who graciously agreed to play after Leyden pulled out of the competition.
While the Mustangs ultimately fell 0-6 they were led by the play of WR/DB Stephen Abini, OLB JAcob Marmolejos, and DL Erik Kelso.
Champions are built in the off-season. Be present, be coachable, bring effort—every lift matters.
