The varsity team ended summer healthy, feeling good about our players, and comfortable developing all of our players in many different areas. June's focus was on strength & speed development. We average over 140 players, Freshmen and seniors, in the weight room. Each day, we lifted and worked on speed development. Our Seniors (Guardians) worked with the younger players, teaching our core fundaments of strength and speed. July focused on developing all our players in offensive and defensive positions. Our practices concentrate on the core fundamentals and base schemes we use in the program. As we worked through July, we hosted 12 teams for the DGS Mustang 7v7 and Lineman's Challenge. On July 14th, the team headed down to Bloomington, Illinois, for our T.E.A.M. Camp hosted by Illinois Wesleyan University. The players experienced dorm life, college cafeteria food, team bonding, and the opportunity to be coached by college coaches. Each day started with a 6:45 am wake-up call and ended with Lineman League and 7v7 games around 9 pm. The trip always allows the team to compete against other top teams across the state. We return from our trip to a more developed football team, a team that has developed GRIT, and a team that understands what it takes to compete at a high level.
As we head into Week 0, we look forward to opening our stadium with the rest of the DGS fall sports. Everyone will have an opportunity to get on the field at 7:45 pm on Friday. We feel honored and supported by the community, the District 99 administration, and the school board for investing in and upgrading our facilities. I always remind our players that people believe in our program, and it's up to us to give back through hard work and preparation.
We look forward to celebrating with everyone on Friday night.
The sophomore Mustangs are gearing up for the upcoming season and looking to build off of their freshman year. The sophomores have been working throughout the offseason and started coming back together to focus on football early this summer in June to improve all over the field. We are looking forward to our week one battle of the Mustangs against Metea Valley.
Be sure to come see us this Thursday night at our pre-season Inter-squad scrimmage and Meet-the-team night. HIT HARD!
Friday night was a special one for the Freshman Mustangs as they took the field against the Tigers of Plainfield North for our very first game action of the season! For many, it was their very first football game ever—and for every single player, it was their first taste of high school football under the lights.
The energy was high, the nerves were real, and the Mustangs showed incredible heart. As the game went on, they began to settle in, adjust to the speed, and flash the true potential of this team. Every series brought more confidence, more fight, and more belief in what this group can become.
One moment that really lit up the sidelines came in the second half—a huge hit by Jeremiah Peoples that jarred the ball loose and caused a fumble! That play ignited the Mustang sideline and fueled a strong surge to close out the game.
This was just the beginning, and if Week 0 is any sign of what’s ahead, the Freshman Mustangs have a lot to be excited about this season!
Captains - Varsity
This week, the Varsity focused on defining the characteristics of a DGS Varsity Football Captain. Captains in the football program must be Seniors (Guardians). A captain is not the best player or athlete on the team but the player who holds the ability to lead. The player must be able to lead themselves, on and off the field. The player is in good standing academically and understands the importance of being a student-athlete. They must be able to do the following.
WORKS in the dark and gets it done when no one is watching.
Our MISSION, not their goals.
Willing to make CHOICES for the TEAM.
AUTHENTIC - Can look you in the eye and hold you accountable…
