Civilization is a complex way of life that came about as people began to develop urban settlements. The earliest civilizations developed around 5,000 years ago, first appearing in Mesopotamia; then later thriving in Egypt, in the Indus Valley, in China , and in Central America. As a matter of fact, civilizations developed on every continent except Antarctica. As we will see, all civilizations have certain characteristics.
