In Grade 6,we will focus on four major areas:
(1) connecting ratio and rate to whole number multiplication and division and using those concepts to solve problems;
Often in our class, we will learn and practice the math concepts using manipulatives, drawing pictures of our thinking, and THEN learning the algorithms (shortcuts for the math). This process allows students to learn WHY the math works and creates a deeper, long-lasting understanding of the math concepts. The concepts in sixth grade are the foundation for higher level math (HS Algebra).

There is a website below that students can use to access their math textbook. From there, kids can click on a chapter to get additional help with the math concepts as well as online practice tests and quizzes. Please check out the link below to find out more.
We are quite fortunate that Corvallis School District had purchased new textbooks five years ago that align to the Common Core Standards.
View Textbook - **Make sure you are at the textbook with the hot air balloon on the front cover. Use the drop down menu to select "Common Core" then RESELECT "Common Core 2014". You can use the drop down menu on the book cover to get to a specific textbook page OR....you can click on the chapter link on the left side and then the specific section. There are also links to practice quizzes at the bottom of the left side menu.
The Common Core Standards - Many states in the U.S. have already adopted the Common Core standards. Visit this site to learn more about what they are and why they are being implemented in so many states.
How to Cover a Textbook - Remember, even if you have a stretchy book cover, you MUST also have a brown paper bag cover underneath.
