Making time to take care of ourselves is vital to our health. As educators, we care deeply about the children and families that we work with, and tend to put own own needs behind those of others. It's not selfish to give ourselves rest and recharging time. Celebrate setting healthy boundaries and establishing balanced work habits!
We also know there is more that we need. Self-care is about what we do for ourselves, and community care consists of how we show up for each other, and the collective efforts we make to be well. Community care occurs in the spaces we create to connect with and support one another. This can be within your smaller circle, like bringing food for a loved one who is going through a tough time, or texting a friend to check in. It also includes your larger circle - support groups, community gatherings, clothing swaps, organizing donations for those who have experienced a crisis, and online groups can all be forms of community care.
"There is only so far self-care can go without a community around you to help support you in the moments when you may not be at your best." - Donna Oriowo, PhD, LICSW
