Colgate Equestrian Team welcomes all questions from prospective, admitted, and incoming college students. We love meeting with students to discuss riding at the collegiate level and life at Colgate in general.
Colgate Equestrian is co-ed and welcomes riders of all genders to join our team.
We are a club team and therefore do not recruit our riders. We cannot offer any support during the Colgate admission process.
The Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) is our governing body; we are a part of Zone II Region III. IHSA shows are based on the idea of "catch riding," where riders get on a horse they have never ridden before! This eliminates many financial obligations and makes IHSA shows accessible to all. Throughout the season, riders gain points based on how they place in their classes, allowing them to qualify for regionals and move into higher divisions. For more information on IHSA and its history, check out the IHSA Website!
We welcome all experience levels! Riders come from all different backgrounds, from hunter/jumper, to western, to dressage! To be competitive at IHSA horse shows, we need a full roster, consisting of riders ranging from Intro riders who walk and trot (jog) to Open riders who jump 3' or compete in reining! Whether you have been riding all you life or you have never been on a horse before, you are welcome! We schedule lessons based on ability.
If you have never competed before, don't worry! IHSA shows are very welcoming and let you get a taste of the horse show life.
The Equestrian team is a club sport at Colgate. We have 1 or 2 hour-long practices per week and between travel to the barn, grooming/tacking, and riding, each practice takes up about a 3 hour block of time. Members compete in at least one horse show per season, all which take place on weekends.
Our members are active across many other clubs and organizations at Colgate as well!
Colgate Eq is a positive and welcoming space! Our small lesson groups allow riders to really get to know one another (a lot of times groups will stop for food or Dunkin after practice), and we make sure our members meet each other through other team bonding events. This is a totally fun, no-drama space.
No car, no problem! We ensure that at least one member in each lesson group has a car so that riders can carpool to their lesson. This is a great way that our members bond and get to know each other.
Several of our members have brought their horse with them to school. Availability for a stall at Whispering Hill is not guaranteed, so be sure to reach out to Jo to see what she has available. Riders who bring their horses should expect to plan riding outside of team practices and know that you will be riding schooling horses in our practices to best prepare you for IHSA competition!
Reach out to our captains to get more information or schedule a barn visit!
