2015-Present Associate Professor, Christopher Newport University
2018 Visiting Academic Researcher, University of Oxford
2009-2015 Assistant Professor, Department of Molecular Biology and Chemistry, Christopher Newport University
2008-2009 Visiting Instructor of Chemistry, Department of Chemistry, Washington College
2009 Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry, University of Notre Dame
2003 B.S. in Chemistry, Syracuse University
Jeffrey Carney did his undergraduate degree in chemistry at Syracuse University, where he worked on a short synthesis of all trans-retinal and its isomer 11-cis-retinal under the guidance of Dr. Mark Braiman. During his years in Syracuse, NY, he also held an internship position at Albany Molecular Research, Inc. as an organic chemist in both research and large-scale synthesis.
After obtaining his undergraduate degree, Jeffrey entered graduate school at the University of Notre Dame (South Bend, IN). He held research and teaching assistantships while at Notre Dame under the guidance of Dr. Paul Helquist. His research centered on developing new methods for the intramolecular hydroamination of alkynes, which allowed for the rapid synthesis of pyrrolines and pyrrolidines, structural motifs common in biologically active molecules. He also worked extensively on the synthesis of an unnatural amino acid for inclusion in a small peptide to explore the potential in improving the immunogenicity of human leukocyte antigens.
Jeffrey began his academic career as a visiting lecturer at Washington College (Chestertown, MD). At WAC, He taught the sophomore Organic Chemistry sequence with corresponding laboratories, Advanced Organic Chemistry, and Chemistry of Biological Compounds. After one year in Maryland, Jeffrey was awarded an assistant professorship at Christopher Newport University and in the fall of 2009 he joined the faculty in the department of Biology, Chemistry and Environmental Science.
Jeffrey is married to his amazing wife, Tiffany, whom he met while both where attending graduate school at the University of Notre Dame. They have three fantastic children, Nathaniel, Nicole, and Daniel.
