Class Dynamics
All students will develop independence and good work habits as well as maintaining excellent behavior. Individual responsibility will be stressed. Each student will be required to participate in group activities which are designed to improve self-confidence and teamwork.
Management of the classroom is based upon the principle that I have the right to teach and all students have a right to learn. Mutual respect and cooperation between the teacher, the student, and the parents/guardians is a critical component of this principle. Personal responsibility is encouraged through the use of positive reinforcement, which includes but is not restricted to the following: Reward tickets and Group points. Additional school-wide policies are presented online in the Hirayama Parent Handbook.
Classroom Management
A positive behavior reinforcement system is in place. The Pillars of Character are the standard of behavior for all students. Positive reinforcement will be administered on a consistent basis. Good manners will be modeled and expected. Students will be responsible for their decisions and accountable for their actions with appropriate consequences administered. It is important to remember consequences can be POSITIVE and that this will be our focus. Making right decisions will result in praise and positive rewards.
Group Points will be earned for on-task behavior and positive actions. At the end of a specific time, the winning group will earn a reward. When the class, as a whole, is showing good decision-making and is working on task, other rewards for good behavior may be earned.
If any negative consequences for student decisions, behavior, or lack of classroom focus are necessary, the following consequences will be used (not necessarily in this order):
The student will be given a verbal warning after a conference with the teacher regarding the issue.
The teacher will make a phone call to parents/guardians to discuss the behavior and agree on consequences and modes of redirection.
The student will lose a privilege (a rally, read and feed, movie and popcorn, etc.) and will have to call home. The student may be referred to another classroom for a "time out."
If the above steps fail to correct the problem, the student will be referred to the GIS or principal. Any student behavior which is extremely disruptive or unacceptable will circumvent the steps above and result in immediate referral to the office.
Hirayama PBIS Procedures
At Hirayama Elementary, we believe all students should bring the HEAT!
◦"H" means our students have Honor
◦"E" means our students show
Empathy
◦"A" means our students display a positive
Attitude

Trustworthy
HEAT is expected in all areas of the school: The classroom, co-curricular activities, the MPR, hallways, bathrooms, the playground, the library/computer lab, the office, in parking lots, and in the bus lines and on the bus.
An awards system is in place to recognize those students who display HEAT behavior in any area. This positive reinforcement program will encourage our amazing students to shine!
