Curriculum

Expectations

Third grade is a year of many changes for students. Reading changes from learning to read, to reading to learn. Multiplication tables must be learned, cursive is introduced and independence is greatly encouraged. You can learn more about specific requirements and topics of study on the subject pages. Please feel free to ask me if you have questions about what we are learning or what is expected! You can also find a link to the 3rd grade Common Core curriculum on the Cleveland County Schools website.

Sequence of Skills

We will begin our year with the study of place value and number sense. In reading we will be reviewing the story components such as character, setting, plot, problem and solution, and introducing main idea. Social Studies will have us learning about maps, geography and people of our world. In spelling we will begin with long and short vowels as a review, and progress to more difficult letter combinations and sounds.

Assessment

Assessment is probably the number one change in a child's life in third grade. That is because it will be the first time taking the EOG, or End of Grade test. This test will take place in June as a culmination of everything your child has learned during the year. Before the test, however, third graders will be assessed many other ways in order for me to determine what your child needs. We will look at your child's STAR reading score for Accelerated Reader, DIBELS score for reading fluency, TRC to determine reading level, and the BOG, or Beginning of Grade, test to find where he/she is at the beginning of the year. In addition to that, I will be giving weekly assessments in math, spelling and reading. I will also assess your child informally by observing his/her classwork and homework to find how to best meet his/her needs.
