Have you ever wondered about your school lunch lady?  What does she do when she isn't dishing out the daily special at school? What hobbies or interests does she have?  The “Lunch Lady” Books by Jarrett J. Krosoczka are graphic novels for young readers, and in the series, Lunch Lady doesn't just serve delicious meals-she serves justice! She and her team are undercover spies who solve crimes and serve meals to students who have no idea of their alter egos.

In conjunction with School Lunch Hero Day, Celina K8 School and Hermitage Springs School Nutrition Departments donated sets of the “Lunch Lady” book series to their school libraries.

Honoring the School Lunch Heroes Serving Healthy Meals

Between preparing healthy food, adhering to strict nutrition and food safety standards, and offering service with a smile, Clay County nutrition professionals have a lot on their plate. Add to that the service modifications and stress that have been a daily part of their jobs during this school year.  To recognize their hard work and commitment, Clay County Schools celebrated School Lunch Hero Day on May 7.  School Lunch Hero Day provides an opportunity to thank those who provide healthy meals to our children.

The importance and nutritional value of school meals are well documented. For many children, school lunch is the most important and nutrient-rich meal of their day.  “School nutrition employees must balance many roles and follow numerous federal, state and local regulations to ensure safe and healthy meals are available in schools. School Lunch Hero Day provides the opportunity to thank these hardworking heroes”, said Laura McLerran, School Nutrition Supervisor.  “And with the current nationwide COVID restrictions, school nutrition employees have had to add many daily tasks to help our children receive the nutrition their growing bodies need in the safest manner possible.   All of this would not be possible without the assistance of the many faculty members, educational assistants, and custodians who have stepped up as well to help feed the children, and whom will be deemed “Honorary School Lunch Heroes.”
