We have a strong Family Engagement focus at Barrow. We encourage families to participate in their child's education in a way that fits their schedules and interests. We plan events throughout the year that help families understand our curriculum and instruction so they can further support their learning at home. We also have various Title I meetings, feedback sessions, and opportunities for families to provide input in school decision-making.
We have a wonderful Family Engagement Resource Center that includes a meeting space, access to computers and printing, family resources and books, and a bulletin board that showcases various community activities and organizations.
Our Family Engagement Specialist, Katherine Byrne, is always available to help with family support and needs. You can contact her at byrnek@clarke.k12.ga.us or 706-543-2676 ext. 38306.
We have an excellent Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) that works hard all year to support programs at Barrow and build school community.
Meetings:
PTA meetings are open to all parents and are usually held quarterly.
Committees:
Most of the PTA work takes place through various committees, which are reviewed at the first PTA meeting and open to all volunteers who want to contribute. Some of the committees are: ‘A’ is for Arts, Barrow Boogie 5K, DASH, Gardens and Grounds, Safe Routes to School, Teacher Appreciation, Safe Routes to School, Fall Festival, Football Parking, and the EA Brown Barrow Buddy Fund, among others.

A Local School Governance Team was created during the 2016-17 school year, as part of our district Charter System status. The group includes representation from a variety of stakeholders, including teachers, parents, and community leaders. Members received training and meet at least 6 times during the year. The work of the Local School Governance Team focuses on local decision making related to personnel, finances, curriculum and instruction, and monitoring school improvement goals. Our LSGT recently wrote and received a Local Innovation Grant that funded a sensory room at Barrow, and training for staff in the use of a sensory room and mindfulness strategies. Other grants supported classroom libraries, writing programs, a student clothing closet, and professional learning for staff.
