Barrow Elementary School went through a major renovation process during the 2012-13 school year. There were two main stages of the building process:
The renovation of the original 1923 wings and rotunda—including refinishing the original maple hardwood floors and renovating the original classrooms and the rotunda.
Here is the 1923 building:
The demolition of the rest of the building and the new construction.
In August 2013, we opened our new facility which better supports the many programs and initiatives we have at Barrow.
The opening of our new building coincided with our 90th Anniversary. We held a special ceremony and ribbon cutting to honor and celebrate our 90 years educating Athens youth!
Our ribbon cutting ceremony was held on September 8, 2013.
As you enter the building, you will see a beautiful Family Engagement Center. This space allows for parents and families to work together on school projects and access family resources. In addition, we have a conference room, dedicated for private, uninterrupted parent meetings.
Throughout the building, you will see collaborative learning spaces, which are for small group instruction, mentoring and tutoring, and project-based learning.
We have an amazing Professional Learning Center, which supports our collaboration with the University of Georgia.
Our new Media Center, located in the center of the school, was designed by our media specialist, Andy Plemmons. The furniture is moveable, allowing for both large group presentations and multiple instructional activities. It features two interactive projectors, video monitors, computer areas, a recording studio, student self-checkout stations, and lots of books!
Our classrooms have furniture that is flexible—tables on wheels that can be moved into different arrangements, different kinds of seating for students, cabinets and closets for storage.
“Where am I in the world?” Barrow Elementary School is all about strong community and throughout the building are features that connect students to their community. A compass rose; maps of the city, state, and world; and a tree cookie where you can count the rings are just some of the images that are featured.
We have storage spaces everywhere, which helps us with organization and cleanliness in all areas of the building!
We have a huge cafeteria, which includes a stage for performances and assemblies. Off the cafeteria is a beautiful terrace for PTA events, outdoor lunches, and other activities.
