Purchasing the Device
Families may purchase devices from any supplier of their choosing. We suggest you investigate one that provides good service with timely support.
Please do not leave the purchase until late January as supply will be an issue.
Warranty and Insurance
The college does not own the device, support the device or warranty the device. Experience from the previous Commonwealth-funded Digital Education Revolution scheme in other schools indicated that students who took good care of their device and considered themselves the device's owner rarely had device security issues.
It is strongly recommended to get extended warranty such as the AppleCare+ package or retailer specific extended warranty to ensure there is sufficient support should there be technical issues with the device. As the device is not owned by the College to ensure students have a functional device in class each day good warranty support is important.
This will be at cost to parents. Parents are responsible for coverage of the device. Most home contents insurance providers have this as either part of existing policies or available for clients to add to the policy.
If you are concerned the device is going to be broken, lost or stolen at home or to and from school, you may wish to consider specific accidental damage insurance for the device. You can specifically list the item on your home contents insurance, or you can purchase an Accidental Damage Protection plan for your device. Accidental Damage Protection is available as an option for all our recommended devices.
As with all equipment owned by Students they need to approach their care for the device in a very serious manner.
You may also consider using a device locator service. These services include the "Find my iPad" service built in to Apple iOS devices, "Prey" for
Windows or "LoJack for Laptops".
Internet access on the device will be filtered at school and students will be prohibited from connecting to other networks while at school.
As the College does not own these laptops, they do not come under the College insurance, so it is recommended that student laptops should be insured.
There are several types of insurance that can be arranged;-
AppleCare+ provided by Apple is arranged at the time of your Mac laptop purchase and provides up to three years technical support and additional hardware coverage from Apple, and includes up to two incidents of accidental damage (subject to a service fee)
Manufacturer care packs, such as when purchasing directly from HP, cover additional warranty time, &/or extra accidental damage cover for up to three years.
Single item insurance arranged through commercial insurance agents, you must ask for accidental cover and list the item as being mobile. Premiums will depend on your insurance history and the level of the excess you negotiate.
Item is listed as a specified personal mobile item as an extra on your insurance policy. You need ensure accidental damage is included, and negotiate with the insurer regarding excesses and premiums.
