Districts-State Qualifying Meet concluded the season for the cross country runners this year. The High School girls were led by Freshman Kiera Fonseca who came close to qualifying for state finishing 7 spots out in 22nd. That is the highest girl finish for a Cardinal since 1999 at a state qualifying meet and 4th best ever. Kaydee Swartz had a great comeback this year from serious injury last year finished 46th. Isa Cote was the most banged up team member and hadn't really been able to train in about a month, but ran very well under the circumstances in 51st. Lauren Saxton who at times has led the team finished 56th and was struggling with back issues today. Briana Fonseca rounded out the scoring in 72nd with a strong effort on the hills. Grace Poulton (75th) and Chloe Hamaker (83rd) rounded out the varsity efforts. The girls certainly ran hard today but the pack wasn't able to stay together and in a meet like this that's difficult to overcome. The team possesses talent that could still come together in the future for big things. Kaydee Swartz in the school record holder, Lauren Saxton has gone under 25 minutes more times than anyone in history, and Kiera Fonseca has gone under 24 minutes more times than anyone else. They are making their mark and can continue to do so in the years to come.
The young and inexperienced high school boys did the best they could for what they brought to the table. Sophomore Brandon Vecchio led the way in 77th with his best racing effort of the season. Avery Marvin ran well in 88th. Matthew Patience was dealing with a migraine and finished 92nd. Keaton Adams ran his best race effort of the year in 95th. Braydon Olson struggled in 99th today. Quentin Coffelt finished 100th in a consistent effort. Ashton Gregg experienced some difficulty with a fall and dropping an inhaler but persisted in 101st.

Northern Iowa teams get fast courses all the time so it was nice to get to run on our only relatively flat and accurate course of the season. The weather was cool and the wind even let off before race time as the teams knew the conditions were good for fast times.
The high school girls finished 2nd behind Albia in a great team effort. Kaydee Swartz (8th-22:28) and Kiera Fonseca (9th-22:29) worked together the whole way pushing each other to huge PR's and top 10 finishes earning them medals. Kaydee and Kiera posted the two fastest 5k times in school history and Kaydee now holds the high school girls school record. Both girls competed the entire way and stayed in the moment during the race. Isa Cote (16th-23:55) ran one of her best times of the season giving the girls a focused race effort. Isa already owns the 4th fastest 5k in school history. Chloe Hamaker (17th-24:02) made a nice 90 second jump to run a big PR and picked a good day to run her best race of the season. She is now the 6th fastest in school history. Grace Poulton (21st-24:36) made a nice improvement as well to run strong as the teams final scoring runner. Carleigh O Dell (24th-25:02) ran an amazing first career effort. Freshmen Mya Applegate (2nd JV 25:03) and Carson Bethards (3rd JV-25:30) were next across the line in a massive breakthrough both improving by about 3 minutes. Briana Fonseca (27th-26:01) ran a consistent effort race. Rocio Mataix (5th-JV) returned to action with a strong run as did Elly Sheetz (-9th JV 30:24). Kylie Rockhold (12th 37:32) dropped several minutes off her best time to allow the girls to have a JV team score and they won the JV team race. 8 of the fastest 12 5k's in school history have been run this season showing that this is the best girls team since the move to 5k distances for the girls in 2015. The girls scorers averaged 23:30 which is the best average we've ever had. Despite fielding a full varsity and JV the girls had 3 that didn't run. One of the top runners Lauren Saxton is being held out due allow an injury to heal to better be ready for the conference meet and the goals next week for that race. Bailee Clements collapsed in a scary situation and was carted off and was being monitored after the incident and hope she is able to return this year. Sara Wilhelm will also return next week.
The high school boys finished 5th and despite their youth also posted some great races. Sophomore Brody Patterson (16th-19:01) posted the 10th fastest 5k in school history and was able to finish the race very strong. Sophomore Kaige Cowden (17th-19:09) ran solid and has a tremendous amount of potential running the 14th best 5k in history. Freshman Brayden Olsen (25th-19:55) is making huge improvements in the last week running another PR by over a minute to become the 23rd fastest all time and going sub 20 for the first time. Avery Marvin (26th-20:03) also ran about a minute PR and looked very strong today. Matthew Patience (30th-20:41) continues his vast improvements with another big PR. Brandon Vecchio (32nd-20:59) did struggle and was ill but still fought on to a solid effort. Quinton Coffelt (36th-21:47) ran about a 2 minute PR to become more competitive to round out the varsity efforts. Keaton Adams (14th-JV 22:19) and Ashton Gregg (15th-JV 22:49) both ran PR's as well in the JV race. Bryce Pierson has been struggling with health issues this year and did not run.
The MS boys were without Tate Swartz, but Tyson McDole didn't miss a beat as he led the group to a 2nd place team finish. Tyson (1st-9:22) also ran very strong throughout getting his first career win as he won the boys race. Vincent Carcamo (3rd-9:45) also ran strong and is racing much smarter this season. Nathaniel Bishop (14th-10:36) ran a brave effort for the team in the 3rd slot. Landon McKillip (20th-10:59) and Joe Sheetz (21st-21:03) ran very tough to round out the scoring efforts. Cannon Rivera (24th-11:33) ran his best race of the season competing well. Matthew Coffelt (31st-12:47) also ran a solid effort to round out the teams racing.
The MS girls were led by medalist Jamie Oesch as they finished 2nd behind Albia as a team. Jamie (7th-11:23) is a model of consistent racing. Haley Oesch (11th-11:50) ran very strong as well and just missed a top 10 finish. Trinatie Mothershead (13th-11:56) is racing much more consistent as the season goes along. Kaylee Gregg (17th-12:58), Skylar Yoder (18th-13:00), and Bly Hunter (19th-13:06) ran in a strong pack to round out the scoring. Maren Buckingham (22nd-13:24) didn't have her best race but still ran tough for the team and Riley Yoder (23rd-14:22) ran very well in her best season effort and best 1.5 mile time. The Cardinals will be in action next at the conference championships next Tuesday in Indianola should the weather cooperate.

The Cardinal cross country teams ran on a cool day and challenging course at Clarke. The official results were not totally accurate as the organizers got off on times especially and missed registering a few runners in the results. In instances where I know the official result was wrong I corrected it in this summary. The MS boys finished 1st out of 6 full teams although the 3rd runner was missed in official results. Tate Swartz (1st-12:04) medaled and looked good winning in a time about 20 seconds faster than last year at this race. Tyson McDole (2nd-12:20) also medaled running strong and finishing a minute faster than last year at this meet. Vinny Carcamo (4th-12:45) ran his best time of the season to seal a dominant push up front. Also running season best times were a solid pack of guys who finished out the scoring efforts. Nathaniel Bishop (16th?10th?-13:55), Landon McKillip (18th-14:40), and Joe Sheetz (21st-14:42). Cannon Rivera (26th-15:35) and Matthew Coffelt (38th-16:47) also improved their best times of the season as the boys team looked formidable.
The MS girls team ran well with an improved pack and almost every girl ran season best times for a 2 mile distance. The team finished 3rd behind Van Meter and Albia. Jamie Oesch (9th-15:24) continues her good season. Jamie now has the fastest MS girls time for a CD athlete ever at the Clarke meet. Haley Oesch (15:39-13th) and Trinatie Mothershead (15:40-14th) both ran very well giving the team a strong 1-3 punch up front. The final scoring group for the girls had mini breakthroughs as they all competed hard the entire race with Kaylee Gregg (31st-17:20) and Bly Hunt (33rd-17:36) rounding out the scoring 5. Skylar Yoder (34th-17:40) and Maren Buckingham (35th-17:54) were right behind them in a close cluster. Riley Yoder (44th-19:13) had a much improved time and race as well.
The HS girls are still trying to put together a complete team race but there were several bright spots overall still a good result. They finished 5th out of 9 full scoring teams but a little ways back from one of the conference front runners SWV. If our girls run well and when last weeks #2 Isa Cote returns it appears the girls team is close to the top teams in the conference. Kiera Fonseca (19th-25:16) led the way racing competitively on the tough course and got the only medal for the HS teams. Kaydee Swartz (25:31-27th) is returning to form nicely after a long injury layoff and ran her best time and effort of the year. Lauren Saxton (25:41-28th) battled through a side stitch and held on as the teams 3rd runner still 30 seconds faster than last year at this course. Chloe Hamaker (45th-27:16) rolled her ankle early in the race but fought on to finish as the teams 4th. Grace Poulton (46th-27:40) is giving the team great consistent races finished as the final scoring runner. Brianna Fonseca (50th-28:22) finished as the 6th runner and Mya Applegate (7th JV-28:37) was the 7th Cardinal to cross the line in what was by far her best race of the year. Carson Bethards (55th-29:37) ran a solid race and one of her best times. Elly Sheetz (11th JV-30:02) had a phenomenal breakthrough running 4 minutes faster than ever before and challenging the varsity group until late in the race. Kylie Rockhold (22nd JV-41:36) fought through a tough course to finish. Bailey Clements, Isa Cote, Rocio Mataix, and Sara Wilhelm hope to return to action next week.
The HS boys ran a good tough group effort finishing 6th out of 11 teams and edged Wayne for the 1st time this season. They were led by sophomores Kaige Cowden (21st-20:03) and Brody Patterson (22nd-20:04) who both ran a PR and just missed the medals. They ran a few seconds off of what our top runner ran last year on this course and are running very well right now. Brandon Vecchio (21:35) is running consistent races and finished faster on this course this year than last year. Avery Marvin (42nd-21:53) finished about a minute improved from last year on this course. Two freshman Brayden Olsen (43rd-22:20) and Matthew Patience (48th 22:34) are coming on strong late in the year to round out the scoring for the team. Quinton Coffelt (63rd-24:23) ran solid on the hills rounding out the varsity efforts. Freshman Ashton Gregg (49th JV-28:02) battle through a tough run and a challenging course as well. Keaton Adams and Bryce Pierson hope to return to action next week. The boys appear to be somewhere in the middle of the conference at this moment.
SWV Results-9/13/18
The MS kids started out the racing with Tate Swartz winning the race comfortably in 11:47 lowering his own 2 mile school record. Tate hasn't lost a race on grass in over a year and we are looking forward to a few meets late in the season where he might be pushed a little. Vincent Carcamo ran a very smart race moving from 18th all the way to 4th by the finish and also collected a medal. Nathaniel Bishop (16th) and Matthew Coffelt (39th) both ran much improved races over the last outing. The boys had a few sitting out and didn't score as a team.
The middle school girls did well in a competitive field of 9 scoring teams. They finished 2nd only to 3A Creston. Jamie Oesch (6th) collected her 3rd straight medal and is a strong athlete and competitor. Haley Oesch (12th) also ran strong for the girls. Trinatie Mothershead (30th) struggled a little today but helped the team as the 3rd team finisher. Kaylee Gregg (39th) and Maren Buckingham (40th) continue to run solid as the final scoring runners. Skylar Yoder (45th) had a great race going early and hopes to put the whole race together by next week. Bly Hunt (47th) battled it out as did Riley Yoder (73rd) to round out the girls efforts. This was the 1st actual 2 mile race of the season.
The high school girls put up a good fight and showed more toughness today as a lot of them weren't feeling well going into it. They finished 5th as a team in a tough field only 8 points behind KMA Land's preseason POI favorite East Union and also behind POI title contender SWV but in a close team race. 3A Creston and a ranked Shenendoah also finished ahead of the girls and they beat other POI and district schools who finished behind them. There is reason for optimism that a very exciting POI team race could unfold later this fall. Lauren Saxton (17th-22:56) is starting to come to life and was able to chase down runners with a very strong last 400 meters to lower her own school record from a season ago. Isa Cote (20th-23:03) had by far her best career effort and ran incredibly strong during the middle stages of the race only a few seconds behind Lauren also going under the old record. Keira Fonseca (29th) has been super tough this week despite being ill and managed to go sub 24 tonight. Those girls put up 3 of the 4 fastest 5k's ever in a deep field. The 5k distance has only been contested for 4 years in Iowa and so the distance doesn't have a long history yet, but this years team is putting their stamp on it. Kaydee Swartz (38th) continues to move up in the pack as she returns from a devastating injury over a year ago. We've been pleasantly surprised at how fast Kaydee is starting to return to form. Brianna Fonseca (39th) ran very tough and improved from last two meets to round out the scoring 5. Grace Poulton (41st) is a model of consistency in effort and performance once again as the teams 6th. Chloe Hamaker (44th) struggled with a nagging injury but still ran solid today lowering her time from Monday by about a minute. The girls team lacks a true front runner but has a very solid pack time. The JV girls snuck into the medals with Carson Bethards (6th JV) and Rocio Mataix (9th JV) earning medals. Ellyson Sheetz (16th) also is running consistent races for the ladies as she rounded out the teams efforts.
The high school boys are still developing as runners but I was very proud of how gutsy they ran as a group. Brody Patterson (So) runs very smart and tough races and finished 25th in a very difficult field. He constantly was attacking and gave great effort. Brandon Vecchio (So) finished much closer to the teams top runner today in his best race as he starts to look sharper. Avery Marvin (So) ran consistently well as the teams 3rd man. Freshman Matthew Patience ran out of his mind with a career best effort as the varsity's 4th man. The entire team ran a great come from behind strategy picking up ton's of runners but Matthew really executed that method well. Braydon Olson did struggle today but still battled to be the teams 5th man. Quinton Coffelt looked much better today running strong for the varsity group. Also breaking into the varsity group this week was Keaton Adams with his most competitive race of the season. Ashton Gregg continues to develop as the teams 8th tonight. Bryce Pierson has been ill and didn't finish and Kaige Cowden who led the team last week will return next week. The boys are in more of a development phase with the youth but still have hopes of a top 4 finish at the conference meet.

Coflax, IA-Meet Summary
Overall the cross country teams had a great day at Colfax competing against some conference and district competition. The middle school girls finished 2nd out of 7 teams (51 finishers) in an improved team effort. Jamie Oesch (3rd) led a strong trio of medalist for the team as she is establishing herself as one of the top contenders every time out. Trinatie Mothershead (6th) had a much stronger race this week a few seconds back. Haley Oesch (10th) also ran well upfront to give the team a strong 1-3 punch up front. Rounding out the scoring 5 were talented Kaylee Gregg (22nd) who is improving and Maren Buckingham (23rd) made a huge improvement and is racing more confidently. Skylar Yoder (26th) and Bly Hunt (27th) also kept the pack strong. Riley Yoder (39th) had a much improved run as well.
The middle school boys continued their winning ways as they beat a strong field to win the meet out of 11 teams represented (65 individuals). Tate Swartz(1st) and Tyson Mcdole (2nd) ran what would equate to some of the better times ever run by a MS cardinal. Those two are ready to HS competition and are dominating the middle school fields at this point. They may face some competition from bigger schools later in the year. They both medaled as did Vincent Carcamo (8th) in a solid first race of the year for him. Landon McKillip (21st) ran really strong as the teams 4th man and Joe Sheetz (22nd) rounded out the scoring 5 in a good run. Nathaniel Bishop (31st), Cannon Rivera (36th), and Matthew Coffelt (54th) rounded out the teams effort.
The high school girls are starting to look like a competitive team after a rough start to the season. This week they finished 4th out of 12 teams represented (90ish individuals). They beat several POI and District teams and finished right behind PCM who qualified for state a year ago and is on the watch list this year. The Cardinals had a strong pack of 5 girls all within 11 spots of each other. Our 5th runner was higher than anyone else's 5th except the team champion. Freshman Kiera Fonseca (19th) continues to impress as she led a trio of medalists for the girls team. Kiera competed very tough as she wasn't feeling very well today but continued to battle for the team. Veteran Lauren Saxton (21st) also medaled in a very competitive effort. Isa Cote (23rd) earned her first career medal and ran closer to what she's capable of this week making the girls strong up front. Chloe Hamaker (29th) and Kaydee Swartz (30th) competed very hard for the team to keep our pack time tight and made our team success possible today. Grace Poulton (42nd) is making consistent progress and Briana Fonseca (56th) battled it out to round out the varsity efforts. Mya Applegate (61st) ran about 2 minutes ahead of her last race. Carson Bethards (70th) struggled a bit today but will bounce back. Also running hard were Ellyson Sheetz (76th) and Kylie Rockhold (90th) for the girls.
The high school boys put together a solid run getting a glimpse of what they will need to do at conference to make it into the top 3. They finished 6th out of 12 teams (102 individuals). Sophomores Kaige Cowden (17th) and Brody Patterson (21st) continue to lead the charge and both moved from around 40th early on into their finishing positions. Both boys are tough minded competitors and Kaige earned his first career medal and Brody got his second in a row. Brandon Vecchio (32nd) is competing with consistent effort and also moved up during the race. His consistently may indicate a breakthrough in the near future. Avery Marvin (41st) and Brayden Olsen (49th) also competed well to put the team into the top 6 overall and round out the scoring. Ashton Gregg (68th) ran his best race of the year and hopefully will continue to build on that performance. Rounded out the teams efforts were Quinton Coffelt (76th) and Keaton Adams (79th).

Overall much improved team racing tonight! I only got one picture from tonight..so I'm sure others got much better ones. Zach Clark decided due to more teams attending at the last minute (only 3 originally-grew to 7) he was going to medal thru 10 instead of 5...so he will get those in and to the medalist probably next week. MS will likely run twice next week (Pleasantville-Monday and Corning-Thursday) since got rained out tonight. Course was certainly tough test for everyone-but will make us stronger.
The High School girls improved as a team this week. They finished 3 out of 4 today and within a couple points of 2nd. Wayne beat our girls by 62 points a week ago and today we beat them. Chariton beat us by 55 last week and we were within a couple points today. I think we will continue to make progress on people as season goes along. Lauren Saxton (9th) and Kiera Fonseca (10th) led the way capturing a medal each. Lauren ran a conservative early race and ran people down at the end moving up 4 spots in the final 2 miles. Kiera had a great race going and was running around 5th before a side stitch hampered her last half mile, but a great race nonetheless. Chloe Hamaker (13th) put together a significantly improved race beating many girls who beat her last week and moving up 3 spots in final 2 miles. Isa Cote (16th) struggled physically with nagging injury, but even on a rough day was the 4th girl and Grace Poulton (17th) ran big for the team and was needed in the final scoring position. Grace moved up 14 spots in the final 2 miles. Kaydee Swartz (22nd) and Briana Fonseca (23rd) rounded out the varsity scoring with tough runs. Rocio Mataix continues to make great progress finishing as the 4th overall JV runner. Also rounding out the JV with determined efforts were Elly Sheetz (7th JV), Bailee Clements (10th JV), and Sara Wilhelm (16th JV).
The High School boys finished a respectable 3rd out of 5 and only 2 points from 2nd. Sophmore's led the way as Brody Patterson ran the best race of his life in 6th earning a medal. He kept attacking the entire way as he went from 18th at the mile to 6th by the finish. Kaige Cowden (11th) didn't have his best race but still solidly our 2nd man and moved up 7 spots in the final 2 miles. Brandon Vecchio (16th) is giving very consistent racing efforts for the boys and moved up a few spots in the final couple miles. Brayden Olson (17th) stepped into the 4th position with a great freshman effort moved up 5 spots in final 2 miles. Avery Marvin (18th) rounded out the scoring with a tough run while struggling with a side stitch. The scoring boys aren't deep so they really need everyone to run well on the same day which is not easy. Matthew Patience (22nd) ran well in the 6th man position and is running strong for a freshman. Quinten Coffelt was designated JV but actually our 7th finisher. Quinton ran well on the hills and was the top JV finisher and Keaton Adams was the 2nd JV finisher. Ashton Gregg rounded out the efforts as the 6th JV finisher. The boys race finished in an absolute down pour. The back of the pack for the young team is going through some growing pains at times as they continue to develop and gain experience.
8/30/18 Wayne Invitational Cross Country Results and Summary
The Central Decatur middle school teams started out the action for the Cardinals on a nice weather day but a challenging course. The middle school boys finished 1st of 3 full teams to win the team race. The middle school girls finished 2nd of 5 full teams as both units competed well. The boys were led by a dominant 1-2 performance from Tate Swartz and Tyson McDole who picked up individual medals. Nathaniel Bishop (11th), Joe Sheetz (15th), and Cannon Rivera (19th) all ran hard to round out the 5 person team scoring. Also competing very well were Landon McKillip (20th) and Matthew Coffelt (23rd) in a strong team and pack run. The girls were led by Jamie Oesch (4th) who got her first career medal as she led a strong pack of girls. Haley Oesch (7th), Trinatie Mothershead (9th), Kaylee Gregg (20th), and Bly Hunter (21st) rounded out the scoring runners. Also running well were Skylar Yoder (25th), Maren Buckingham (31st), and Riley Yoder (41st). The MS teams have a nice group and a strong pack of kids.
The high school girls finished 9th out of 9 full teams and had a rough day in the team scoring, but had some individual highlights and will look to bounce back. Freshman Newcomer Kiera Fonseca was close to the medals in 21st with an excellent first performance. Kiera ran mentally tough and picked up a lot of spots throughout the hilly course. Also battling it out to round out the team scoring were Brianna Fonseca (44th), Kaydee Swartz (53rd), Chloe Hamaker (56th), and Carson Bethards (57th). Briana ran a strong first race. Kaydee wasn't expected to be in the top 5 in her first race back in over a year from a serious injury. Chloe will continue to be in that top group as a talented freshman and Carson stepped up and ran strong on the hilly course. Lauren Saxton the school record holder had a difficult day and finished 63rd. Lauren has been training very well and will return next outing strong. Grace Poulton also fought through her first race rounding out the varsity 7.
The girls JV got 3rd as a team and Rocio Mataix had a great opener getting a JV medal in (8th JV). Mya Applegate who is managing a chronic issue will be in and out of the line up finished (11th JV). Sara Wilhelm did great to get over first time race jitters and finished (14th JV). Elly Sheetz (20th JV) and Bailee Clements (29th JV) rounded out the JV team scoring. Kylie Rockhold (33rd JV) ran a career best race and is improving dramatically from a year ago and Maggie Frank (36th JV) ran tough coming back from a surgery a year ago.
The high school boys finished 8th out of 11 in the team race. The boys ran hard and competed despite the youth on the team. Sophomores are the oldest in the group and 4 of them led the varsity group. Kaige Cowden (23rd) and Brody Patterson (25th) both ran very strong and smart races and worked together. Promising start for Kaige's first career race and Brody was about 40 spots ahead of last season as this race. Brandon Vecchio and Avery Marvin also worked together in 39th and 42nd both higher finishing spots than a year ago. Freshman Brayden Olson (47th) stepped up and ran well into the 5th and final scoring position. Matthew Patience (59th) and Bryce Pierson (70th) rounded out the varsity efforts in their first ever high school race. The varsity group were able to compete reasonably well as a team and hope to progress in the coming weeks. Keaton Adams (21st JV), Quinton Coffelt (23rd JV), and Ashton Gregg (31st JV) rounded out great efforts on the JV. The boys and girls teams will need to cut down the pack times in the next few weeks and be healthy moving into the middle of the season.
