Submitting your EE

All final Extended Essay will be submitted via Managebac. Your submission should be in a .doc or PDF file.

It is important to submit your EE properly formatted. The guidelines below come directly from the IB. Please follow them

Also be sure to check the subject specific guidance for your subject areas to be sure you have met all the expectations for presentation of an EE within that subject area.

Presentation

The extended essay should be written in a clear, correct and formal academic style, appropriate to the subject from which the topic is drawn. Given that the extended essay is a formally written research paper, it should strive to maintain a professional, academic look.

To help achieve this, the following formatting is suggested.

  • the use of 12-point, readable font

  • double spacing

  • page numbering

  • no candidate or school name on the title page or page headers

  • the file size must not be more than 10 MB. (Note that the RPPF is uploaded separately and is not part of the overall file size of the essay.)

Submitting the extended essay in the required format will help set the tone of the essay and will aid readability for on-screen assessment by examiners.

Please make note of the chart below regarding what is included and not included in the final word count of 4000. Please note that in-text citations are NOT included in your final word count.

Your Title Page should include the following information:

  • Extended Essay in (your subject area)

  • If you are writing in a Language B or Literature you need to also include the group of your essay

  • Title of the your essay - it is best if this is your research question

  • Word count (not including bibliography, appendix or footnotes)

  • alphanumeric candidate code

Proofreading

The whole essay needs to be proofread carefully by the student (computer spelling and grammar checkers are useful but will not do everything). They must not ask someone else to proofread their work as this is an important part of the learning experience.

Don't forget:

  • Title page

  • Table of contents

  • Page numbers

  • Properly formatted Works Cited - begin on an new page with the title "Works Cited". Make sure it's in alphabetical order.

This Youtube tutorial will help you insert page numbers starting after the table of contents page.
