CREATING AN EXTENDED ESSAY OUTLINE

One of the most important steps in the EE writing process is the creation of a clear, detailed essay outline. Without a well organized roadmap, it will be difficult for you to keep your writing focused and clear.

Why do I need an Extended Essay outline?

Compared to other essays you will complete during the IB Diploma, the EE is significantly larger and more complex. As such, you will need to be clear as to how you are going to structure, organize and unpack your data, research and ideas before you begin. Failing to do so may result in a disjointed and disconnected final product. It may also result in you never really answering your research question. Both of which will impede you getting a strong final score on the assessment.

There is no one size fits all approach

Because EE’s in each subject area vary significantly in terms of structure, style and content. It is impossible to create an essay outline template that can be used across subjects. Instead, the documents linked below are meant to help guide you as to what you should be including in your outline and the level of detail that will best support you in your writing.

Be sure to discuss the outlining process with your supervisor before you start. This will ensure that you are using the best approach for your subject area and topic of focus.
