The primary purpose of assessment and evaluation within the IB Diploma Program at South View High School is to improve student learning. As all students have different learning styles, experiences, and abilities, the assessment and evaluation of their learning must be varied to recognize the full range of their learning. Assessments are most useful when they are included in the planning, teaching, and learning of information. Furthermore, students should be assessed in an environment where they feel comfortable critically assessing their work without fear of judgment.
The policy aims to support access and inclusion in IB schools by reducing barriers through appropriate access arrangements. It follows a whole-school approach, involving all educators, and is intended for school leaders, program coordinators, and IB educators. It should be used alongside guidance on access and inclusion in assessment procedures. However, it does not cover inclusive education as a whole and excludes adverse circumstances like family bereavement or natural disasters which are addressed in a separate policy.
The IB DP Program at South View High School recognizes the richness that language and cultural diversity bring to our community promoting global awareness and international mindedness. We also recognize that language development in one’s mother tongue progresses at varying paces for each student. Our mother tongue instruction is in English, and the chosen Language A course offered is Literature (HL). We understand that language is the root of all learning and that students of the 21st Century need to be able to study, work and live in a global society with fluency in more than one language. To achieve this goal, we provide second language acquisition at the Standard Level in Spanish and Mandarin.
The primary aim of the South View High School IB Program is to place great value on the ethical qualities of both personal integrity and collective integrity. This requires our IB students to be academically honest. This academic honesty is not limited to the students but also should be applied to the teachers, parents, faculty, and administration. We hope to produce graduates who are honest, trustworthy, respectful of others, and responsible for their own actions. Respecting the need for authentic student work is an an important part of this goal.
