How Grades are Calculated

Marking Period Grades

Individual marking period grades are calculated by averaging formative and summative grades separately.

Example:

Summative Average= 85+70+100= 255/3 = 85

Formative Average= 100+95+95+100+100+0+0+85+0= 575/9 = 63.88

A Regular or Honors Course is 60% Summative and 40% Formative. Therefore:

Summative Average = 85 x .6 = 51

Formative Average = 63.88 x .4 = 25.55

Add those totals = 51+25.55 = 76.55

An AP Class is 70% Summative and 30% Formative. Therefore it is calculated a little differently:

Summative Average = 85 x .7 = 59.5

Formative Average = 63.88 x .3 = 19.16

Add those totals = 59.5+19.16 = 78.66

Final Course Grades

Course Grades are calculated by converting each marking period grade to a number (quality points) between 0-4 based on this scale:

A = 4

A- = 3.67

B+ = 3.33

B = 3

B- = 2.67

C+ = 2.33

C = 2

C- = 1.67

D+ = 1.33

D = 1

F = 0

Example:

A Student earns the following marking period grades: B, A, D+, C-.

We convert each grade to it corresponding number (quality points).

B=3

A=4

D=1.33

C-=1.67

Adding them together: 3+4+1.33+1.67 = 10 divided by the 4 marking periods: 10/4 = 2.5

We then determine the final letter grade based on this scale:

3.75-4.00 = A

3.48-3.74 = A-

3.20-3.47 = B+

2.80-3.19 = B

2.50-2.79 = B-

2.20-2.49 = C+

1.80-2.19 = C

1.50-1.79 = C-

1.20-1.49 = D+

0.60-1.19 = D

0.00-0.59 = F

In the above scenario the students grade was a 2.5 which calculates to a B-
