FAQ's

How often will my child have your class?

Our class meets everyday for 34 minutes. It is a half year course.

How do I see my child's grades?

Carteret uses Realtime grading system. If you cannot log into the Realtime system please contact the middle school guidance counselors.

Why does Realtime show an assignment however there is no grade listed?

Assignments are posted on Realtime prior to being distributed in class. The grade for the assignment will appear on Realtime once the assignment has been completed in class and handed in by the majority of students.

Why did my child's grade dip dramatically after a poor test grade?

Carteret's grading policy states that tests are worth 50% of the overall grade. Therefore a poor test grade can cause the overall grade to fluctuate up or down significantly. Proper preparation for tests/quizzes is therefore an important part of the course.

Do you offer extra help?

Extra help is offered during lunch and after school in room 118 upon request (NOTE: Please make sure your child has asked in advance so I know to stay after). Students should bring a writing utensil and something to work on or let me know in advance a topic they are having difficulty with.

How can I be involved in my child's education?

I highly encourage students and parents to join the Remind 101 app for this class and be aware of the variety of resources on this website.

What is the class textbook?

The class textbook is Ancient Civilizations Through the Renaissance by HOLT MCDOUGAL.

What is the best way to contact you?

The best way to contact me is through email or Remind 101. Please allow at least 24 hours for a response.

Important Links/ Apps

Parent Portal

Log onto parent portal to check student grades. If you cannot access parent portal, contact the school guidance department to receive access.

Remind 101

Remind 101 is a text/ email service for students, parents, and teachers. By signing up you will receive text or email alerts from me about upcoming assignments, assessments and community events, as well as pictures of outstanding student work. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND SIGNING UP! If you prefer not to sign up, you can see all of the alerts on the homepage of this website.

Google Classroom

Assignments are handed out via google classroom. Students complete the digital assignments and submit them into google classroom for grading. The grades will appear on parent portal once they are graded.

GoFormative

GoFormative is a website/ app that is used for quizzes, tests, and "formative" assessments. Throughout each unit, I will assign practice (formative) quizzes to the class as part of a beginner or finisher activity. These "formatives" are NOT graded. They are used for practice so that each student can see which content and types of questions they are struggling with. Towards the middle and end of each unit I will assign a test or quiz using GoFormative. Any tests or quizzes will be graded and will appear in the gradebook. Students can track all of their scores in the GoFormative website.

Quizlet

Quizlet allows students to practice ALL of their vocabulary words and maps for early world. I provide time in class for students to practice their words using this app, but I highly recommend students use this app at home as it is a great study tool.

Code High School

Intro to JavaScript students will be using programs from the Code High School interface in order to learn basic coding skills (Code HS offers both high school and middle school courses)
