Course Syllabus/Expectations
Spanish 1
Course Description- This is a year-long course emphasizing listening, speaking, reading, and writing Spanish. This course stresses visual, oral, and kinesthetic skills and will introduce students to Spanish/Hispanic cultures through film, pictures, technology, and various classroom activities.
Course Objectives- The objective of this course is to enable the students to use basic Spanish vocabulary and simple grammatical structures to communicate in the Spanish language. This communication with be developed and enhanced through small group cooperative learning, independent practice, pen-pal exchanges abroad, presentations, and the use of technology. In addition, this course will be aimed at helping students foster and appreciation of different Spanish cultures and to help them compare similarities and differences as well as connect with Spanish culture around the world.
Grading- Your grade for each quarter of the academic year consist of the following category weights: homework, classwork/participation, quizzes, projects/tests.
· Homework: 15%
· Classwork/Participation: 15%
· Quizzes: 30%
· Projects/Tests: 40%
Homework Policy:
Homework will be given 3-4 times per week to practice/reinforce skills learned in class. Assignments will generally be worth 5 points each and graded according to the policy below. Homework will account for approximately 15% of the quarterly grade.
· All homework assignments will be posted on my website.
· Most homework will be corrected together in class so that you can learn from your own mistakes
· Grade is based on effort and PROPER, on-time completion
o 5 points – homework is complete and well done.
o 4 points – homework is complete, but lacks quality.
o 3 points – homework is mostly complete (2 out of 3 sections done)
o 2 points – homework is incomplete and/or very poorly done
o 0 points – homework was not attempted or late.
Absent Policy: Students will have 2 days to make up missed homework. Missed tests/quizzes will be determined by the teacher. STUDENTS SHOULD EMAIL TEACHER WHEN ABSENT!
Unexcused Late Work:
Homework will be accepted late with a 50% reduction in grade (must be turned in within 3 days of original due date). Projects will be accepted late with a 10% reduction in grade per day late.
Extra Credit- Extra credit will be given only in the form of “Spanish Learning Opportunities”. This will consist of students participating in out of the classroom learning opportunities such as making a Spanish recipe or watching a Spanish movie. More information will be given on this later.
Required Materials- Students will be required to have their Spanish textbook, three-ring binder/notebook, CHROMEBOOK, and a writing utensil during all Spanish classes
