During the school year your fourth grader is going to bring a “Categories” list home on Tuesday. Each week in their planner on the “spelling words” area, a category glued to the top. The assignment will be for you and your child to list items that belong in that category. Each week the number of items required will be five. Please only list as many as requested. Your child will get a point for every item that they list which belongs in that category. If your child has an item that no one else has written down, they will get ten points for that item. The purpose of getting extra points is to encourage your child to think outside the box and try to think of less common items that belong in a category. Categories is an assignment. The points do not go in the grade book, but it is expected that each child participate.

The topic will come home on Tuesdays. It will be due back at school the following Tuesday. This will allow time for you to discuss lots of ideas with your child. On Tuesdays the category will be shared with the other fourth graders. Children love to share with their peers, so please help them to remember that the book is due back on Tuesdays.

This will be a weekly activity so your child will get in a routine of doing the Categories. There will be times that we will not do Categories, such as short weeks or weeks with early release days. On those occasions there will be a note in the planner saying, “No Categories this week."
