Develop opportunities for students to create and invent for authentic audiences through meaningful curriculum and collaborative experiences both in the classroom and in the library. Uphold legal obligations regarding the Freedom to Read act and privacy laws.

These are an ongoing focus at Fireside Elementary and specific topics are taught during library time. In 3rd-5th grades, we are currently focusing on awareness of how images are manipulated to sell products. Students have requested suggestions for photo/video editing applications and programs with which they can experiment.
Here are a few suggestions:
WeVideo: every student has an account through the district. Sign in through the SSO portal and select WeVideo. Sign in with your school Google account. You can edit photos and videos, including color-keying backgrounds.
Google Chrome: Google Photos is part of your Google/Chromebook suite. Try the editing and filter features.
Go to the Chrome Store and search for the following:
PIxlr Editor has some annoying advertisements. Do NOT click on these. Play around with the editing features. The ones marked PRO cost money, so they won't work.
iPads (search the app store):
YouCam is a free "beauty" makeover app, but it does have ads and in-app purchases options. Be cautious.
Makeup Touch by Modiface. Again, there are ads and in-app purchase options. Skip them.

There are currently thousands of unfilled positions in technology fields and employers are in desperate need of employees who can design, code, collaborate, and problem-solve. To plant the seeds early, we're excited to be featuring coding, robotics, and content-rich technology projects at Fireside Elementary. There will be a mixture of in-class activities and activities in the library/makerspace.
