Steps to using NoteFlight:
To join: Click “Join Noteflight.” Under email address, use the email address you check the most along with that password.
To create a new piece of music: Click on “New Score.”
To create a title: Click on title and write in a title.
To create composer: Click on composer and write down your name.
To change the clef: Click Staff, then “Change clef.” Violins select the first clef. Cellos and basses select the second clef. Violas select the third clef. Click OK.
To add or delete measures: Hover your cursor above the music. You will see a droplet that has a plus sign inside of it. Click this. To delete a measure click on the circle that has a minus sign in it.
To select an entire measure or multiple measures: Hold the shift button and then click the measure. The entire measure should be in orange now. If you would like to select more measures, keep holding shift and click another measure. This feature can be used to alter many measures at the same time AND to transpose AND cut/copy measures.
To change key signature: If you would like the key signature for specific measures, select measures using the step above. Otherwise, click Staff, then “Change Key Signature.” Select one of the following: C Major is blank; G Major has one sharp; D Major has two sharps; F Major has one flat. Click OK.
To change time signature: If you would like the time signature for specific measures, select measures. Otherwise, click Staff, then “Change Time Signature.” Change the top number ONLY for 2/4, 3/4, or 4/4. Click OK. More advanced students can change the top and bottom numbers for 6/8, 9/8, and 12/8.
To add a note: Hover the cursor above the staff and then click where you want the note. While the note is orange you can manipulate it with the cursor, change the rhythm of the note, or change it into a rest.
To change the rhythm of the note: While the note is orange, click on the rhythm wanted in the box. NOTE: If a rest will not go away, it is because the rest is needed to complete the number of beats in a measure.
To change a note into a rest: While the note is orange, click Backspace.
To undo any action: Click Edit and then Undo. You can also click Ctrl-Z.
To save: Click File and then Save. You can also click Ctrl-S.
To play: Click Play and then either Play from Start or Play from Selection. You can also click P.
To add a tempo marking: Click on Lyrics and write in a tempo marking using the chart below. In order for the playback to work correctly, you will also need to change the number at the bottom of the page to match your word that was written in.
60 - 70 = Adagio = Very slow tempo
72 - 88 = Andante = Walking speed tempo
90 - 98 = Moderato = Medium tempo
100 - 118 = Allegretto = Tempo in between Moderato and Allegro
120 - 138 = Allegro = Lively tempo
140 - 158 = Presto = Quick and lively tempo
160 - 180 = Vivace = Very fast tempo
To add written dynamics (p, mp, etc.): Click on the note you would like the dynamic to be below. Click on Score and then click on Dynamics/Expression. A cursor will appear. Type in the dynamic marking you want.
To add a crescendo or decrescendo: Click on the note you would like the dynamic to be below. Next click on the crescendo (3rd item at the bottom) in the box. Next, double click either the crescendo or decrescendo. It will appear in the music and will be orange. To make it larger, click and hold the orange square and drag it larger.
To add articulations (accent, staccato): Click on the note you would like the articulation to be on. Next click on the accent (1st item at the bottom) in the box. Next, click either accent or staccato mark.
To add slurs: To add slurs, click on the note you would like the slur to be start on. Next click on the crescendo (3rd item at the bottom) in the rhythm box. Next, click the slur mark. It will appear in the music and will be orange. To make it go over more notes, click on the orange square and drag it to the last note you want under the slur.
To add a staff: Click Staff and then Add Part Above/Below the Staff. Choose the instrument. Click OK.
To change the playback sound of a staff: Click Staff and then Change Instrument. Choose the instrument. Click OK.
