The atom is the smallest complete unit of matter. Elements are specific types of atoms.

Parts of the Atom

atomic number of an element = number of protons

atomic mass of an atom = number of protons + number of neutrons

atomic weight or relative atomic mass = average atomic mass of a sample of an element
