What is it?

Challenge 24 is a mathematics game in which competitors use multiplication, addition, subtraction and division in various combinations to manipulate four numbers on a card to equal 24. The Trumbull County Educational Service Center and the Tribune Chronicle hold their annual Challenge 24 Tournament in the Fall.Challenge 24 is open to students in grades 4-8. Students participate in four divisions: grade 4 in Division 1; grade 5 in Division 2; grade 6 in Division 3 and grades 7&8 in Division 4.

Who can join?

Any current Brookfield student in grades 4 through 8 is welcome to join. 3rd Graders may be invited to join during the 2nd Semester

How do we practice?

Details for this are still being worked out. We will meet in Ms. Rodgers's room, BE 140 after school. Middle School Students are expected to come to my room when CAR RIDERS are dismissed.

Do we have to have our own cards?

No. If you wanted to get your own set to practice that's awesome, but not required. I have sets of cards that we can use to practice in person and will be figuring out a way to share the cards in virtual environments so we can practice while social distancing.

Does it cost anything to join?

While there is no fee to join, students are asked to purchase team t-shirts to wear at the tournament. We are hoping to work with the Spear-It Shop to get a really good deal. Details will be provided as we know more.

When is the tournament?

The tournament is usually held the week before Thanksgiving. (This may be different from your experiences in years past) I have not been given the exact date for this year yet. Due to circumstances, it's possible the tournament may be held at a later date. It's all up in the air right now.

If the tournament is canceled or not held, will we still practice?

Yes, the club will continue even if there is no tournament (in preparation for next year, and because it's fun!) If possible we may be able to hold our own internal tournament.

Are there tryouts?

Everyone is welcome to join the club and come to practices. Often the county limits how many players we can bring to the tournament for each division. If we have more players than spots available, we will have some type of "tryout" for those spots. We are also often allowed to take alternates. We will do our best to give everyone a chance to participate.

Do I have to be good to join?

No. Experience is not necessary. We will teach you how to play and practice to help you become better. Everyone is welcome.

Is it hard?

It can be. But with practice it will get easier. The tournaments do move fast, but again, with practice, we will get better and better.

In the past the different divisions have used different types of cards depending on age.

Grades 4-6 use single digit cards in rounds 1 & 2 and Double Digit, Pocket, and Variable cards in round 3

Grades 7-8 use single digit cards in rounds 1 & 2 and Double Digit, Pocket, Fraction/Decimal, Integer, and Algebra/Exponents.

Round 4 for all grades is a challenge and they don't tell us ahead of time what type of cards they are.

I have ALL of these types of cards for us to practice with :)
