Brewer Community School prides itself on the core values that have been established here. These core values are identified as the "Community of caring Values," which include the following:
We hope to take these four values and help instill a "Growth Mindset" with our students this year so that they may grow as people as well as students and can begin modeling for others.
Fixed Mindset vs. GROWTH Mindset
A Growth Mindset is something we are striving for in our classroom. It can be the difference between students completing assignments simply to complete them, or trying something new and challenging within each piece of work.
Trying something new and taking on challenges can be scary for most students. It's usually scary for two reasons: One, because it is unfamiliar and Two, because it means there's a chance they could fail. With a Growth Mindset, failure is seen as an opportunity for deeper learning and an appreciation for the process!
A lot of times, we are focused on a final product; a finished essay, project, or homework assignment. That is having a Fixed Mindset, which limits growth and learning and puts the focus on having the right answer or best grade. A Growth Mindset invites students to step out of their comfort zones, be creative, and allows the focus to be on the process of learning - where success = EFFORT.
If you're interested in learning more about this, the book we've used to learn about it is called Mindset - The New Psychology of Success by Carol S. Dweck, Ph.D.
