Student Teaching

Congratulations on reaching your final placement!

You are ready to begin planning for your student teaching. Please read below to find out what you need to consider before you make your placement request and how to request your placement, register, prepare for and complete your student teaching.

Remember: All placements are arranged by the Clinical Experiences Office.

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE TAKEN AND PASSED THE GACE CONTENT TESTS FOR YOUR DEGREE PRIOR TO APPLYING FOR STUDENT TEACHING.

Students do not ever contact the school or school system directly to arrange or change a placement.

Considerations BEFORE you request a Student Teaching Placement

The student teaching semester (or second semester of your residency) is a "full semester" commitment, according to the Georgia Professional Standards Commission. You will be participating full-time at the school with the same schedule the teacher has. This includes before and after school duties such as bus, car rider, and breakfast, as well as meetings, tutoring, conferences, planning, workshops, PTA, curriculum nights, spaghetti suppers, Saturday fall festivals, student programs, etc.

You will also have the responsibilities of planning, materials preparation, and grading; and you will find that this does not fit into the school day. You will be spending time working at home in the evenings and on weekends, too.

It is important for you to start NOW thinking of your responsibilities that may need special consideration.

  • Will you need child care? Do you care for elderly parents or have other special responsibilities? Be sure you have a back-up plan and a back-up plan for the back-up plan! Attendance during student teaching is critical and you are expected to be there every day.

    • Are you an officer in your sorority or other campus, church, or community organization? Now is a good time to arrange for someone else to assume your duties while you are student teaching. It is not the time to agree to be an officer in your sorority or other organization, chair the bake sale, coach the little league team, or take on any other role that would require much of your time.

  • Do you need to make any arrangements for transportation?

  • Do you have a job now? What arrangements do you need to be away from your job? Remember that student teaching truly is full-time.

  • Have you taken and passed the GACE content tests for your degree?

Thinking of these things now will help you better plan and make arrangements for any support you will need during your student teaching semester.

Important: If you have a special situation that might interfere with your student teaching, please talk with your advisor. This may not be the best semester for you to complete your student teaching.

Requesting your Student Teaching Placement

  1. When the application window opens, you will receive an email with a link to a Google form. Please submit your application for placement for student teaching using that link by the appropriate deadline.

  2. Shortly after submitting your Google Application, you will see the additional required documents for student teaching appear in your LiveText dashboard, in a course called Student Teaching Applications. Follow the instructions within those assignments to complete submitting the documents required for your student teaching.

Registering for your Student Teaching

Once your placement application has been submitted you must submit the following requirements in LiveText before your student teaching placement can be finalized.

  • Proof of Current Professional Liability Insurance

  • Graduation Audit

  • GACE Content Area Scores

  • GA Preservice Certificate

After you have completed all these requirements, you will be cleared to register for your student teaching course and either the Applied Instruction or Student Teaching Seminar course that goes with it. You will not be able to register for your student teaching courses until you have submitted all of your LiveText requirements. Please do not ask your advisor, the registrar's office, etc., to help you register before you receive notice from the Office of Clinical Experiences that you have been cleared.

Preparing for your Student Teaching

  • CHECK YOUR BRENAU EMAIL DAILY! This is the way we will contact you if there is a question about your placement request or if there is any information you need to have. Time is critical sometimes and it is important that you check your Brenau email daily.

  • Put your required Student Teaching Orientation on your calendar as soon as you receive the date and time and make sure you are available to attend. You MUST attend Student Teaching Orientation.

  • Go ahead and submit your student teaching requirements in LiveText ASAP. Keep up with the deadline for each requirement and make sure you meet each one.

  • Start a list of questions you have, but be patient. You will receive MUCH information at the required student teaching orientation. Remember, it is mandatory that you attend this orientation.

  • There are documents on the Clinical Experiences website that will help you prepare now for your student teaching.

**Download and read the Student Teaching Guide in the Field and Clinical Experiences now.

**Download and read the Student Teaching Weekly Checklist now. (Add your questions to your list and, again, be patient. Your orientation will answer most of these questions and you'll have a chance to ask questions there, as well.)

Completing your Student Teaching

Your university supervisor is your first contact if you have any questions or need assistance during your student teaching.

The Student Teaching Guide in the Field and Clinical Experiences Handbook contains specific information about student teaching..

The Student Teaching Suggested Weekly Checklist breaks down what is expected during your student teaching. This is a guide and may be adjusted to accommodate individual circumstances in your student teaching (example: spring break, the need for additional observations, etc.).

Complete your Student Teaching Project in LiveText. The Student Teaching Project in LiveText includes detailed instructions for your student teaching assignments. Be very careful to meet each due date and deadline.

You will also have assignments from your Applied Instruction or Student Teaching Seminar course. You will receive these assignments and directions from your course instructor.
