Teacher candidates must complete a minimum of 48 hours working with an assigned Mentor Teacher as part of their field experience. Each field experience lasts the entire semester, and only one can be completed at a time. Teacher candidates should not contact the school or school system directly to arrange or modify their placement; all placements are coordinated by the clinical office.
Field experiences are completed alongside placement-embedded courses. Before beginning their Student Teaching/Internship, candidates must complete three field experiences across the designated grade bands. (There is no specific order for completing Grade Bands, if you are a teacher of record, save the grade you teach for last.)
Elementary Education Grade Bands:
PK-K
1-3
4-5
Middle Grades Education Grade Bands:
4-5
6-7
8
Secondary Education Grade Bands:
6-8
9-10
11-12
Special Education Grade Bands:
K-5

Methods courses have been identified in each major as placement embedded courses. When teacher candidates take these courses, they complete a field experience at the same time. Embedded courses have assignments that must be completed in the field experience.
To register for an embedded course you must complete the Registration-Application for Embedded Courses AND Apply for a Field Experience. If you cannot locate the form, please reach out to your Academic Advisor.
Your Field Experience will begin the week you return for the start of Brenau's Semester. You can reach out to your Mentor Teacher as soon as you receive their information to introduce yourself!
You will receive a contract from the Office of Clinical Experience outlining your assigned school and mentor teacher information. This contract must be reviewed, signed, and uploaded to LiveText.
In addition to the contract, there are other required LiveText assignments that must be completed throughout your Field Experience. These assignments will be assessed by your assigned University Supervisor, who will also observe your teaching.
Please note that during your Field Experience, you are not merely an observer; you are expected to be actively engaged in the classroom. Your participation should contribute to the learning environment and provide valuable hands-on experience.
