Week of March 4 - 8, 2019


Mon. 2/4 -Welcome back! Daylight savings is coming soon and acts as a sure sign of Spring! After choice reading today we explored the 1950s sense of conformity - taking a state and capital quiz and viewing a "Duck and Cover" drill video. HW: If absent today, please view the video to be prepared for discussion on Tuesday. The video can be found on Google Classroom.
Tues. 2/5 - After choice reading today, we examined Act III of The Crucible and worked to answer the questions during our discussion. We will complete ACT IV later this week. HW: "Life in the Suburbs" reading (read, highlight, take notes -- annotate) and answer the 4 questions at the end of the reading - due Friday.
Wed. 2/6 - After choice reading today, we used materials on Google Classroom to examine the Korean War. Please use the PowerPoint to complete the handout and then view the short film about the soldier experience. In class on Thursday, we will talk about the Korean War and how it impacted the United States. We will work with Act IV of The Crucible in class tomorrow. HW: "Life in the Suburbs" reading (read, highlight, take notes -- annotate) and answer the 4 questions at the end of the reading - due Friday.
Thurs. 2/7 - Where is Spring! I'm ready! We examined the Korean War in class today and answered the question "What does the Korean War teach us about America's fear of communism during the 1950s?" in small groups and then talked about it as a large group. We then transitioned to The Crucible, answering questions about Act III and students had a chance to act out Act IV. HW: "Life in the Suburbs" reading (read, highlight, take notes -- annotate) and answer the 4 questions at the end of the reading - due tomorrow. Please finish Act IV in The Crucible for homework on Monday.
Fri. 2/8 - In class today, after choice reading, students participated in a Stations Activity, rotating through 4 stations examining social conformity of the 1950s. All materials for this class assignment are on Google Classroom. HW: The final section of the handout (that has the essential question) needs to be answered by Monday, March 11. Please use at least 3-5 specific examples to back up your ideas in the response. Also for Monday, please finish Act IV of The Crucible (page 137 in the book and page 131 on the PDF)

Week of March 11 - 15, 2019


Mon. 3/11 - In class today, after choice reading, we collected the formative from the 1950s social conformity activity (done in class on Friday, March 8) and went through Act IV of The Crucible. HW: Complete the handout: Character Analysis on John Proctor (front page) for class on Wednesday. Check out the back side of the handout; we will examine that part in class on Wednesday. Wed. 3/13 - After choice reading today, we finished up a few presentations on The Crucible (period 3/4) and then examined John Proctor as a tragic hero. HW: Please complete the handout comparing McCarthyism and The Crucible for class on Friday. Be sure to begin (or complete) the handout tonight so that you can ask questions tomorrow. You will be able to use this handout on the summative on Friday, March 15. You will find a link to the handout on Google Classroom. Be sure to print out the handout and hand write your responses.
Thurs. 3/14 - After choice reading today, we talked about a few new books on the shelves of our classroom library. We then continued our conversations about Social Conformity of the 1950s through an episode of I Love Lucy (Job Switching), answered a few questions and had a class discussion. We handed out our 1950s unit novel, The Catcher in the Rye. We will begin reading the book tomorrow in class but wanted you to have the details today. On your reading chart it does say to read through Chapter 2 for tomorrow but since you have a summative on The Crucible and McCarthyism, we'd like you to focus on preparing for the assessment. HW: Be sure to prepare for the McCarthyism/The Crucible summative tomorrow. Complete the entire handout (with the Venn Diagram on the front) for class tomorrow. You will be able to use information from that handout on your summative.
Fri. 3/15 - Students took their The Crucible/McCarthyism assessment in class today. Once students had completed the summative, we will begin working on The Catcher in the Rye in class. HW: Chapter 3 in Catcher is due on Monday. Be sure to stay on top of the reading by using the reading schedule and complete the handout on "Tracking Holden's Locations" while you read. This needs to be done throughout the book.

Week of March 18 - 22, 2019


Mon. 3/18 - After choice reading, students took a quiz on Chapters 1-3 in The Catcher in the Rye. We then explored the first few chapters of the novel and made comparisons to the Ester Greenwood, the main character in The Bell Jar. Students were able to examine quotes in this activity. HW: Read Chapter 4 in The Catcher in the Rye for class tomorrow.
Tues. 3/19 - Today in class, we continued our conversation about social conformity and how some were able to conform while others rebelled. We viewed a film, The Century: Happy Days and completed a handout. HW: Please view (and complete the handout) for the first 30 minutes of the film for class tomorrow if you were absent from class today. We will finish the film on Thursday. Read Chapters 5-6 for Wednesday in The Catcher in the Rye.
Wed. 3/20 - In class today, students took a quick quiz on Chapters 4-6 in The Catcher in the Rye and then learned about The "Golden Age" of Musicals with Mrs. Jaques. Students were given a project on musicals of the time period. We will be working on this assignment over the course of the next week. HW: Read chapters 7-8 in The Catcher in the Rye for Thursday and work on your music integration project - due April 1. If you need to make up a quiz (missed due to an absence) for The Catcher in the Rye this week, please do so by Friday, March 20.
Thurs. 3/21 - After choice reading, we finished the film and discussed the handout (see links on Tuesday, March 19) and examined Holden's character and what's been happening in the novel. We began doing a character analysis on Holden (we will continue this tomorrow). HW: Read chapters 9-10 for tomorrow and work on your Music Integration project.
Fri. 3/22 - We began our class with choice reading and then students took a quick quiz on Chapters 8-10 on The Catcher in the Rye. We then continued our work with Holden Caulfield by having students work in small groups on a character analysis chart. Students choose adjectives to describe Holden and then used quotes to back up their ideas -- working to outline his feelings and personality. HW: Read Chapters 11-12 in The Catcher in the Rye for Monday. We will begin working on the Music Integration project on Monday.

Week of March 25 - 29, 2019


Mon. 3/25 - Students were introduced to the Dinner Table Skits today. Materials are all on Google Classroom. On Wednesday and Friday of this week, students will have 1/2 the class period to work on their music integration project and the other half of the class period to work on the Dinner Table skits. Please see us with questions. HW: Keep up on your reading schedule (read Chapter 13 tonight) for The Catcher in the Rye and work on your music integration and dinner table skits.
Tues. 3/26 - In class, students worked in small groups on their quotes for the novel. We then analyzed those quotes as a class and continued our conversations about The Catcher in the Rye. HW: Keep up on your reading schedule (read Chapters 14-15 tonight) for The Catcher in the Rye and work on your music integration and dinner table skits.
Wed. 3/27 - Students divided their class time today between working on the music integration project (due Monday, April 1) and their dinner table project (due Friday, April 5). We will do the same routine on Friday. If you are in the A group, please come to American Studies first and if you're in the B group, please go to the band room first. HW: Keep up on your reading schedule (read Chapter 16 tonight) for The Catcher in the Rye and work on your music integration and dinner table skits.
Thurs. 3/28 - In class today, students were asked to complete a survey on Google Classroom regarding some possible film choices. Please do that ASAP. We can't guarantee you'll get your first choice but we'll do all that we can. Once the survey was completed, students worked on a poetry analysis We Wear the Mask and worked on The Catcher in the Rye assignments. HW: Keep up on your reading schedule (read Chapter 17 tonight) for The Catcher in the Rye and work on your music integration and dinner table skits.
Fri. 3/29 - Students divided their class time today between working on the music integration project (due Monday, April 1) and their dinner table project (due Friday, April 5). If you are in the A group, please come to American Studies first and if you're in the B group, please go to the band room first. HW: Keep up on your reading schedule (read Chapter 18-19 for Monday) in The Catcher in the Rye and work on your music integration and dinner table skits.
