Successful Transition Education Program

STEP is a transition program at Boston Latin Academy for students returning to school after an extended absence due to illness or hospitalization. Re-entering school after an extended absence can be overwhelming for students and their families. STEP provides individualized support services for students during their transition to back school and encourages success at school by supporting students' academic, social and emotional needs.

All BLA students are eligible for the transition program. Students who are referred to STEP have missed a week or more of school due to illness or hospitalization. Students are enrolled in the program for many reasons related to medical challenges that impact their learning and academic success at school. Students are recommended for STEP by a Guidance Counselor. A re-entry meeting or student support team meeting is required in determining whether STEP is suitable for students returning to school from an extended absence. School personnel including teachers, guidance counselors, nurses, and administrators are made aware of student's enrollment in the STEP program, however, details surrounding student's absence from school are kept confidential.

STEP provides a safe place for a smooth transition back to Boston Latin Academy. For more information regarding this program, please contact Christian Ekholm-Jacobson cekholmjacobson@bostonpublicschools.org
