The Varsity Girls Basketball Team entered last weekend's state tournament as the #2 overall seed which matched them versus a tough Rigby team for the opening round on Thursday. Rigby was a district champion from the East, but they were relegated to the #7 seed due to their MaxPreps ranking. Boise opened the first quarter outscoring the Trojans 10-7, and then they tightened up their defense, allowing just 4 points by Rigby in the second which resulted in a 24-11 halftime advantage. The Brave used that momentum to stave off a 4th quarter threat by the Trojans and propel them to a 51-42 victory, advancing to the state semi-finals. Senior Kaity Haan led the Boise with 15 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 steals. Senior Morgan Montgomery added 12 points and 4 assists, while Senior Avery Patricco added 10 points.
On Friday, in the state semi-finals, Boise met another team from the East, the Madison Bobcats. Boise had bested Madison during the opening round of state in the previous season, so the Bobcats were out for revenge. The first quarter was played evenly, with Madison holding a slight 11-10 advantage. In the second, however, Boise went ice cold and was plagued by turnovers resulting in a 22-14 deficit at halftime. The Brave regrouped and meticulously attacked Madison's 1-2-2 zone in the halfcourt while also trying to apply more full-court pressure. Thankfully, that attacking mentality spelled great things for the Brave as they regained the lead after the third and held on for a 39-35 win. Senior Avery Patricco led all scorers with 12 points and 2 steals. Senior Kaity Haan added 10 points and 9 rebounds, while Junior Libby Nelson contributed 10 points and 2 steals off the bench for the Brave.
On Saturday, the stage was set for a much-anticipated rematch between Boise and the #1-ranked Owyhee Storm. The two teams only met once during the regular season in early December with the Storm edging the Brave by 7 points. Both teams took turns scoring in the opening period, and the score was knotted at 11 apiece. In the second, Owyhee took a small advantage and entered halftime up 1, 20-19. Boise struggled versus Owyhee's pressure all game, but in the third, some costly turnovers resulted in the Storm out-pacing the Brave 13-6 and taking a 33-25 lead. Boise would battle back in the fourth, but unfortunately, the time ran out on the Brave and they lost 33-38. Senior Avery Patricco led Boise with 10 points while Junior Libby Nelson posted 9 points in the low-scoring affair.
Boise finished the season 23-4 overall, won the SIC District Championship for the 4th consecutive year, and was state runner-up. Congratulations to this group on a fantastic season!
This event "takes a village" and by village we mean Erinn Norman as lead organizer, the wonderful local businesses who donated items for our raffle, many volunteers like Peg Luke and our coaching staff who helped with shirt/raffle ticket sales, all the players who worked the stands for many, many games, Michael Najera who took some amazing photos to document the event, Mrs. Tetrick and STUCO who helped us put a spotlight on Pink Zone with Tip-Off Week, and so many fans who bought shirts and raffle tickets. We also want to shout out Del Taco who sponsored our event shirts for a second year. Their donation means every shirt sold is an extra $7 towards our cause. Lastly, a big thank you to Warren Maxfield, our contact at the American Cancer Society, who provided literature and giveaways for the game and secured a great speaker for the Tip-Off assembly.
This brings our 16-year total to $57,305 for our cause! Thank you to all who helped make Pink Zone 2025 a great success!
(Kaity Haan, Morgan Montgomery, Norah Woodland, Alison Turcke, Avery Patricco, Caroline Wyatt, and Presley Binder)
Spring open gyms are opportunities for our players to "just play". These open gyms differ from our fall open gyms when our staff utilizes the IHSAA-permitted 10 instructional hours outside of our high school season. Open gyms are open to younger athletes who wish to challenge themselves versus high school competition.
A very special shout-out to Senior Avery Howell who was recently named a McDonald's All-American, only the second girl from Idaho to ever receive this honor. This selection means Avery is one of only 24 girls chosen from the entire senior class in the nation. She will play in the McDonald's All-American game held in Houston on April 2nd, and this game will be nationally broadcast on ESPN2 at 4:30pm. ESPN did a breakdown of the girls roster and was very complimentary of Avery's game. On Tuesday, February 27th, we will have a special jersey presentation at Boise High School in the auditorium. The ceremony will start at 11:45am, and the first 250 people there will receive a FREE McDonald's cheeseburger!
On Friday, January 19th, the Boise High Girls Basketball Team held their 15th Annual Pink Zone event, raising awareness and funds for breast cancer research. Each year, all members of the girls basketball team pitch in to sell raffle tickets and pink shirts leading up to the big day. Final numbers have now been tabulated, and we are proud to report that this year was our MOST SUCCESSFUL PINK ZONE YET. We raised a record-setting $10,707 for the Idaho Chapter of the American Cancer Society. This year brings our 15-year total amount of money raised to $47,500 for breast cancer research!
This event would not be possible were it not for the incredible organizational efforts of Assistant Coach Erinn Della, our wonderful volunteers (Peg Luke, Roanna Barclay, Katie Kappel, Amber Tetrick, and Victoria Sanchez), the rest of our Boise High GBB Coaching Staff, and our dedicated players who walked the stands and sold raffle tickets at so many events.

Last spring the Idaho High School Activities Association changed their rules regarding open gyms for all sports. In the past, the rules were very clear that coaches could not instruct during open gyms. Instead, we were limited to unlocking the basketballs and supervising play.
THE RULES HAVE CHANGED:
If you're curious, please refer to rule 17-2-3 of the document below. You'll see that sports are now allowed 20 total hours of instruction/coaching outside of their designated sports season during the school year. Our program has elected to schedule 12 open gyms in the fall, prior to our season, and save 8 open gyms for the spring as we prepare for summer basketball. There is no limit to how many players can participate in each open gym event.
SO WHAT WILL OPEN GYMS LOOK LIKE WITH THE NEW RULE CHANGE?
Athletes can anticipate a fast-paced, one-hour workout that focuses on an array of basketball fundamentals. Coaches will do their best to ability-group players and intend to incorporate multiple program drills, individual skills, and small-sided games. A list of all open gym dates/times is below. You'll notice that all of our scheduled open gyms are right after school and will likely conflict with athletes who are participating in a fall sport. This is by design! Athletes who are already on one of our school's fall sports teams should focus on that sport as their main priority during the fall. Open gyms are primarily for those athletes who are not already involved in a sport on campus.

On Friday, December 19th Head Coach Kim Brydges received an unexpected piece of Priority Mail from members of the 2000-2001 Varsity Girls Basketball team at Boise High School. In addition to some amazing words of encouragement from this group of alumni, there was a very generous donation included.
COVID twice interrupted the start of the 2020-2021 season, and this was a very welcome show of support as they ladies were slated to begin tryouts on December 22nd. With great pride, Coach Brydges read the letter to all athletes at the start of the first tryout session.
The Varsity team also sent handwritten notes to each alumni and together we created this short video to further thank them. ENJOY!
THANK YOU VIDEO TO THE 2000-2001 BOISE HIGH GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM
The Varsity Girls Basketball Team concluded its season this past weekend in the State Tournament as Boise opened with Coeur d'Alene in an early matinee game at the Ford Idaho Center on Thursday morning. The Brave was sluggish out of the gates and struggled to finish shots in the first quarter which resulted in an early 7-17 deficit. Thankfully, Boise found its "mojo" in the second quarter, cutting the Viking lead to just six at half. The Brave surged ahead in the third quarter and held a six-point advantage in the fourth, but unfortunately the Brave was unable to stave off a final run by Coeur d'Alene and dropped their first-round game 50-56. Junior Ashley Banks led Boise with 15 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 blocks. Senior Allison Ross added 12 points, 4 assists, and 2 steals in the game.
The Brave had big expectations heading into the tournament, so that first-round loss was definitely a tough pill to swallow. Still - the team vowed to "flush" the loss and come back, ready to battle on Friday, in a loser-out game versus the Meridian Warriors. Boise had only faced Meridian once during the season and were not proud of their play in that game; thus, they were motivated to avenge that narrow loss. The Brave wasted no time to set the tone, jumping out to an 18-5 lead over the Warriors in the first quarter. Meridian barely outpaced Boise in the next two quarters, cutting the Brave lead to just 2 points at the start of the fourth. However, Boise was able to close the door on the Warriors in the final quarter and notch the 56-44 victory. Junior Ashley Banks led the Brave with 15 points, 9 rebounds, and 2 blocks. Senior Allison Ross added 14 points, 5 assists, and 4 steals while Freshman Avery Howell contributed 12 points and pulled down 11 rebounds in the win.
Boise's win meant a rematch of the district semi-final with Timberline with the Consolation Championship trophy on the line. The Wolves handed Boise its worst loss of the season on February 6th, but the Brave got the upper hand in districts, punching their ticket to state with a 47-40 win. Early Saturday morning the two teams met out at Ridgevue High School to settle the score with one last grudge match between cross-town rivals. Before the game began, Boise proudly accepted the honor of the state Sportsmanship Award recognizing stellar behavior by the players, coaches, cheerleaders, and fans.
Boise then used another strong start to establish a solid 19-14 lead over Timberline in the first quarter. Staunch defense by the Brave allowed just 2 points by the Wolves in the second quarter extending their lead to 30-16 at half. In the second half, Boise was able to match runs with the Wolves and hold on to a 52-41 victory. Senior Allison Ross led the Brave with 17 points, 3 assists, and 2 steals while Junior Ava Oakland added 17 points. After a truncated season filled with numerous COVID protocols and restrictions, Boise brought home the Consolation Championship trophy! A BIG thank you to all who supported the Brave in this challenging season!

The varsity Brave wrapped up their season with another strong showing at the state tournament last weekend. Boise entered the tournament as the #3 seed which brought an unfortunate pairing with the #1 seed from their district, the Mountain View Mavericks in round one on Thursday afternoon. Nonetheless, the Brave came out swinging, trying to do whatever possible to slow down the Mavericks' hot shooting and full court pressure. Boise shot 40% field and 36% from 3pt, however those numbers were bested by Mountain View's 50% FG and 45% from 3pt. The Brave were further hindered by 13 costly turnovers and some poor free throw shooting which added up to give the Mavericks the 51-64 victory. Senior Peyton McFarland and Junior Allison Ross led the Brave with 14 points a piece. McFarland also pulled down 12 rebounds while Ross added 3 assists. Sophomore Ava Oakland chipped in 11 points and 7 rebounds in the game.
The loss relegated Boise to the consolation side of the bracket and a 1:15pm date with the Coeur d'Alene Vikings who lost to the Eagle Mustangs on a last-second bucket on the opening day. Looking for redemption, the Brave left no doubt that they were the stronger team after an impressive 16-6 opening quarter and a 36-19 halftime advantage. Boise continued to extend its lead in the second half with all 13 healthy players seeing action and 10 of those notching points in the scorebook. Senior Peyton McFarland led the Brave with 16 points and 9 rebounds. Senior Madi Williams added 11 points and 8 rebounds while Junior Elle Dingel contributed 11 points in the blowout 63-41 victory.
The win granted the Brave one final game with the Post Falls Trojans and the consolation championship hardware on the line. Boise did an early morning walk-through in the 7:00 hour before boarding a bus out to Ridgevue to take on the Trojans for a 10:00am contest. The Brave jumped out to an early 7-2 lead before Post Falls started to get hot from outside and took a 9-12 advantage at the end of the first. It started to look a bit like the third game in as many days was taking its toll on Boise, but their awesome fan base helped urge them on in the second quarter with some raucous "DEFENSE" chants and overall supportive cheering. As such, Boise entered half on solid run that afforded them a 21-17 lead. The Brave were able to sustain some quality defense in the second half which staved off a couple more runs by the Trojans, and Boise finished the 54-44 win with their four healthy seniors on the floor. Senior Peyton McFarland led the Brave with 16 points, 6 rebounds, and an impressive 7 blocked shots. Junior Allison Ross added 12 points and 3 steals in the victory.
Boise finished its season 17-9 overall and Consolation Champions. A HUGE shout out to our five awesome seniors (Allie Guerricabeitia, Breana Hallam, Peyton McFarland, Hope Shimatsu, and Madison Williams) for their commitment to the girls basketball program, and another HUGE thank you to our wonderful parent/fan group that rooted us on all season. We appreciate your continued support! GO BRAVE!
