Merry Christmas from the Digital Pioneers 2018.

Digital Community Project

This week three of our Digital Leaders went to a local residential home, Cefn Glas to teach and support some of the residents in digital skills. It is safe to say both pupils and residents really enjoyed the first session, and cannot wait for the next one. Pupils were teaching residents how to access their favourite music, hobbies and local information on tablet devices.

The project will be running for 6 sessions. See images below of our first session - a pupil blog post is coming soon.

Give a warm welcome to our new Year 7 Digital Pioneers

All About Issac

Hello my name is Isaac and I am going to tell you about me. I have good perseverance and I don’t give up easily. A good example of this when I was really struggling when I first started to swim but I have come a long way since then and now I can swim for a lot longer and faster. And that has been what it’s like for IT. My new role of being digital pioneer is a big one because of the way technology is coming along so I will need to attend allot. I’m a good attender, I can tell you this because I have only missed one day off in junior school.

All About Leland

Hello, my name is Leland Love i was recently made a “Digital Pioneer” at

Blackwood Comprehensive School. And i am quite proud of this position, and i hope to fulfill it properly.

I enjoy Gaming, Coding, Watching Youtube and the like, from personal experience i am able to setup my own servers for gaming and i can edit code for games to make them work properly. Now a bit about me, i am Comedic, smart, and i can make almost anything tech related work.

Personal Experience

I can tell you almost any part of a Computer, and how they work and the History of computers and gaming. For example i know that a…

  • Graphics card displays what’s on screen, how fast it displays and refreshes it is dependant on the card itself and Games rely on it for most of its power.
  • A CPU is a Computer Processing Unit which basically tells the computer a bunch of 0’s and 1’s which in turn tells the computer what to do and how to do it, Games also relyon this for power and running capabilities

However this is not about that, this is to tell you who i am, but i believe i am not perfect with my knowledge on computers, i may currently be an expert on some of the computers things but i know that for others, i need help with them, other things i do is run a Youtube channel and i run servers for games, anyways that is all for now i would, however like to leave you with one final message that i made up on my own “Greatness is not achieved by one’s own, so allow other people in to grow together

All about Jimmy

Hello! My name is Jimmy, I am a newly employed ‘Digital Pioneer’ at Blackwood Comprehensive School.

I am a quirky, smart, kind and bubbly dancer that has recently been given a new rank; and that is a ‘Digital Pioneer’.

Digital Pioneers are groups of selected students that are chosen to work with computers, in case you didn’t know, I was selected because of the following qualities:

  • I am a fast typer,
  • I have always been fond of computers,
  • I remember many safety rules for computer users, including the s.m.a.r.t rules!

Those are what I personally believe are good qualities for a Digital Pioneer.

Although, I may need some help with trying new things, but I shall soon grow a custom to them, because I live by a rule, “We cannot become what we want by remaining who we are. - Max DePree I truly believe that this is an important rule to live by because it shows that if you want to be great, you have to try your best.

Anyways that’s all for now, see you soon! 😃

See Jimmy's interview below on why he wanted to become a Blackwood Comprehensive School Digital Pioneer:

**UPDATE** - We have chosen our Year 7 Digital Pioneers and look forward to working with them every Monday lunchtime at 1.30pm! Look out for an image of our group soon!

We recently had our first meeting where we looked at ideas of how we wanted to see digital skills used in school in the future. We hope that some of these ideas will help form a 'school digital vision' for the future! We used Google slides to collaborate together. See some of our group's ideas below:

Here you will find lots of information about the role of our Digital Pioneers and see how important they are within our school.

Our Digital Pioneers are chosen for their passion of the subject including computing and the use of digital technologies.

A Digital Pioneer must show us they are ready to take on this very important role by being exceptional students in and out of school, we have a strong focus towards our ‘digital reputations’ so all our Digital Pioneers will be equipped with the knowledge they need to help others stay safe on-line. E safety is a huge part of our practise and we encourage the Digital Pioneers to attend regular meetings about changes to social media and constantly keep ourselves informed on any new risks we may face when communicating on-line. The Digital Pioneer's role will include feeding back information about using digital technology and Internet Safety to other pupils, whether that be through informal discussions, in form time, PSE, assemblies, creating podcasts, videos webpages etc.

As well being able to support us with staying safe on-line, our Digital Pioneers are shown how to trouble-shoot many of the problems we may encounter when using technology around school, for example if the class computer is not outputting any sound or the interactive whiteboard is not working, our experts will be a teachers first port of call.

The role of the Digital Pioneers is constantly growing, as does the technology and information we have available to us on-line – our experts all have a special ‘Digital Pioneer’ badge that they wear with pride!

We are currently looking to appoint new Digital Pioneers in Year 7, see Miss Hawkins in M1 for further information and take a look at the information below:
