When we talk about the affective needs of gifted children, we are focusing on social-emotional needs. Social-emotional needs are needs that gifted and talented students have along with their thinking (cognitive) needs. They may include sensitivity, intensity, high expectations of themselves or others, a strong sense of justice, perfectionism, depression or underachievement.
We have open conversations in our classroom about these topics. I will share resources throughout the year that can help meet those needs. If you see your child struggling with something at home that is not showing up at school, let me know. I will also contact you if I notice that they are struggling in a specific area in relation to their affective needs.
