6th Grade STEAM Art

Welcome to 6th Grade Art with Mrs. Post!

6th grade students receive an art education for one quarter of their school year. Students learn the elements and principles of art and how to apply them involving science, technology, engineering, and mathematics to create quality artwork. Students will complete assessed art units. These units include creating artwork along with a written "design process" to provide a narrative of progression. Students explore culture, various artists, and use content specific vocabulary throughout the process. Art projects are aligned to the Minnesota Visual Arts Standards.

Here's what you need for art class...

Pencil

Whatever book you are currently reading - in case you finish an assignment early

Paint shirt

A few disposable shopping bags to bring finished artwork home

Planners/Bison Binders: Students will receive a daily point for filling out the art section in the BCMS planner each day. Planner checks will often happen on Mondays or Fridays. This is a way for art students to keep track of where they are at in the process of their own current project. Examples of this might include writing down the learning target, remembering to bring in an extra art supply from home if desired, or keeping track of late work.

Sketchbooks (these are provided by Mrs. Post): Each student writes and draws in their "sketchbook" about the task, brainstorm, plan, improvements, and results. The "sketchbook" is attached at the bottom of this page. Students receive a project grade based on their written design process. There are set due dates on which these are graded, whether they are finished with the artwork or not. It is each student’s responsibility to finish art projects at home if desired or come in before/after school to complete his or her projects as needed. However, students will be given a reasonable amount of time to complete the assignments in class. Simply talk to Mrs. Post to set up extra time (I am very flexible, we all work at different paces). The purpose of this due date system is to reinforce time management and to keep things moving. After the artwork and assigned sketchbook pages have been graded, the artwork will be sent home to keep. *Some completed artworks may be displayed throughout the school and sent home at a later date.

* If a student receives a grade in which they believe they can improve upon, I find it valuable to re-work the assignment. If any student is willing to improve their work, I am happy to re-grade any assignment.
