6th Grade Math and Science
Ms. Little
Room C-2
Grading:
Habits of Work (HOW) points are earned in three areas:
Participation: I expect students to arrive on time with supplies and homework assignments complete. During class I expect students to be focused, responsible, and respectful.
Classwork I do not expect students to all work at the same rate or in the same way. Classwork is graded on effort and quality of work, not volume.
Homework I usually assign homework 4 nights a week.
Standards Based Proficiency (SBP) grades are earned by showing what one has learned. This may be in the form of a quiz, chapter test, district exam, or project.
The final report card grade is based on % of total points earned out of total points possible on the following scale:
Homework:
Your student writes the homework in their COBRA Calendar every day except Fridays.
Credit for assignments can be tracked in the berkeley.illuminateed.com website. The online grade book is updated at least every 2 weeks.
Homework should take no more than 20 minutes a night. If your child is struggling, please let me know. The student has the amount of days he/she was absent to make up the work. If your child is struggling with a homework or class assignment he/she should make arrangements for tutorial sessions by accessing my office hours calendar here.
Testing:
Testing is an ongoing and adaptive process. If a student is stressed in class, he/she may ask to take the exam during office hours. I am also open to oral exams for those who have difficulties with writing. I allow students to take tests as many times as they want in order to show me what they know. (I do change the problems on each iteration of the test.) I am happy to go back and change grades at any time.
All of my major exams are leveled. Each topic is tested in the 2, 3, and 4 range. For a student to achieve a grade of 4 on an exam he/she must pass each level in each topic.
Sometimes a test will be in the form of a project because some people do better showing proficiency this way. I want to give students every opportunity to succeed.
Absence:
When your child is absent, it is up to your child to ask for and complete missed work as well as attain missed notes and/or make appointments for individual tutoring. Your child has the number of days missed to make up the work.
Appropriate Participation:
Each day, your child begins with 4 participation points. Students can earn negative or positive points throughout the class period. The total for each 2 week period is entered in the online grade book as the participation grade.
Challenge and Support:
Students are encouraged to drop in for help or to just chat about math and science during office hours
Students who would like to earn a 4 in H.O.W. must have an average grade of 90% or above in H.O.W. and do the following:
Students who would like to earn a 4 in SBP must earn an average of 90% or above on all SBP assignments.
