My Mission
To meet the needs of all my students while enabling them to work together to meet the Ohio’s World Languages Learning Standards in a safe, comfortable, interesting, and challenging environment.
Classroom Activities:
Þ Read authentic texts ranging from articles in contemporary magazines, newspapers and Internet sources to children’s stories and classical literary texts.
Þ Initiate and sustain meaningful spoken and written communication.
Þ Present information, concepts, ideas and viewpoints on a variety of topics.
Þ Make cultural comparisons.
Þ Listen to a variety of accents through different media.
Rules:
Be respectful.
Be on time.
Have materials ready.
Listen to directions the first time they are given.
Policies:
Homework Policy
“The most powerful single moderator that enhances achievement is feedback… providing information on how and why the child understands and misunderstands, and what directions the student must take to improve”
John Hatie.
Therefore, the students will have homework everyday. This may not always be written work. The homework will include vocabulary and grammar assignments, vocabulary memorization, grammar studying or supplemental sheets completion to reinforce what we have studied or practiced in class.
Mastery Policy
If any student is missing three or more assignments at any given time, the student will receive study hall detention until all assignments are completed.
Student Work Policy
During the course of the year, the students will receive assignments in all four foreign language areas: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Since these assignments directly relate to improving their language skills, it is important that they understand the use of outside sources to complete their work.
In my classroom PLAGIARISM is defined as using Internet on-line translators, on-line translation services, word-processing translation programs, and handheld translators. While it may seem that using an on-line translation service is an easy way to do translating work, it will actually waste your time. The translator does literal translations- not idioms or expressions, which all languages have. It translates word for word, which may not give the meaning they wish to convey. It will also include conjugations of verbs that they have not yet been taught. I will rather help them than have them use any type of translating program!
Therefore, they are not permitted to use any of these media forms to complete assignments. However, they may use dictionaries, reference materials, and spell-check features within word-processing programs. They may also consult with tutors and fellow classmates, but they may NOT copy another person’s work (including homework) and pass it off as their own.
Any assignment that does not adhere to these regulations will receive a zero in addition to a disciplinary referral to the principal.
Cultural Hours Policy
The students are required to complete two cultural hours per unit. These hours are to be completed outside of the classroom, on their own time. These activities will enhance their Spanish usage outside of the classroom and will outreach to the community! The students must complete an activity log with a description of the activity completed and an adult signature.
Cell Phone Policy
NO CELL PHONES! (unless used for classroom work with prior approval by the teacher)
1st Offense: You get it back at the end of class!
2nd Offense: You get it back at the end of the day!
3rd Offense: Your parent can pick it up from the office!
Reading Policy
The students are required to read in Spanish silently or as a group for an entire period once a week. The students then will have to complete a short assessment for each reading.
Reading Benefits:
· Students with positive reading skills will improve their writing skills.
· Reading broadens background knowledge which helps you make connections and understand new material.
· The students will learn new words on their own.
· Reading will build their confidence in their ability to work through reading comprehension challenges by learning to pay attention to context in a story.
Participation Policy
Each day that the student is on attendance will have the opportunity to earn 3 participation points for a maximum of 15 points a week (up to 135 points a quarter!)
How to keep points:
1. Being on task all class period. Not being a disruption to teaching, learning or other classmates. Raising their hand to respond to questions voluntarily and Speaking SPANISH!
2. Having their homework completed when it's due!!!
3. Having all necessary materials (pencil, worksheets, binder, chromebook, headphones or earbuds, etc.)
