In an April 18 report to BP, Halliburton warned that if BP didn't use more centering devices, the well would likely have "a SEVERE gas flow problem." Still, BP decided to install fewer of the devices than Halliburton recommended -- six instead of 21.
April 19th
Circulating all the mud in a well of 18,360 feet, as this one was, takes six to 12 hours, say people who've run the procedure. But mud circulation on this well was done for just 30 minutes on April 19, drilling logs say, not nearly long enough to bring mud to the surface.

Off the coast of Louisiana, a huge explosion engulfed offshore drilling rig Deepwater Horizon in flames. The Coast Guard rescued over 100 workers from the platform, 17 of them injured and taken to hospitals. 11 workers went missing, and a search-and-rescue mission was underway to try to locate them.
A fire and explosion occurred at approximately 11:00 PM CDT, April 20, 2010 on the DEEPWATER HORIZON, a semisubmersible drilling platform, with more than 120 crew aboard. The human toll of the greed of Oil execs to avoid safety and inspection because above all it's about the money. Condolences to all these families, so young were they this earth in such an unnecessary and horrible tragedy. Money won't bring them back, but BP owes these families many with young children to rise. Yet today their CEO exclaims "just a tiny leak", really, the loss of these men and the damage to our waters and wildlife, the men belong in prison! To think that the 7 BP Executive made it off safely reminds me of rats leaving a sinking ship. Nothing but an easy write-off for the corporate sharks.
These types of men are the backbone of this country - not the fat cat money-changers being bailed out and babied by our cowardly Congress. And certainly not the scandalous CEO's pointing fat fingers at one another and speaking in carefully crafted weasel words to deflect responsibility for these men's untimely - unnecessary - deaths...
And coming on the heels of the coal mine explosion, too...
If we, the people, do not put the pressure on Congress and the President, too, and tightly regulate the industry, we will hold the blame for the next catastrophe...
No working person should be put in such danger to earn a dollar.
Rest in peace, my friends.
The cost (in any terms) of continued fossil fuel dependency cannot be calculated...
The corporate greed that has kept us frozen in 19th century energy technology is responsible for the murder of these innocent workers.
When a company makes the obscene amounts of money BP does and they won’t even perform routine safety checks, there should be criminal prosecutions. These deaths were the result of some person's choice to cut corners. This loss was preventable with a routine and simple test of the blowout preventers. These children will soon learn and understand that daddy is gone but he didn't have to be if the people he was making rich just looked out for him a little in return. They will also learn and understand the hard reality that all the money in the world can't buy them one more minute with their dads'. More people need to see the faces of the men who lost their lives and read about the families they left behind.

It was announced Gulf Coast workers would begin controlled burns on portions of the oil slick. White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs told reporters that the Office of Management and Budget was working to lift the $75 million cap that currently exists on the amount oil companies pay for non-cleanup and containment costs.
Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take; but as for me, Give me Liberty, or give me Death!
