My name is Shannon Steiner and this is my 32nd year of teaching. Growing up, I spent the school years in Green Bay and was fortunate enough to spend summers and weekends at my parents cottage on Mid Lake in Woodruff. Fond memories of swimming, boating, playing in the sand box, building forts in the woods, cross country skiing, spending time in the puppy pen at Jim Peck's, going to the teeny tiny Minocqua Library, ice skating, riding a burlap sack down the BIG slide, water skiing, Vacationland youth softball, horseback riding at Circle-M-Corral, and biking abound. In high school I participated in volleyball, basketball, track and my favorite class was math. I graduated from UW-La Crosse in 1994, receiving a bachelor of science degree in elementary and middle level education with a minor in math. In 2003, I earned my master of education degree in curriculum and instruction from Olivet Nazarene University. I obtained certification in special education in 2004 from UW- Steven's Point, and began working as a resource teacher at AV-W School that same year. Prior to working at AV-W, I was a middle school math teacher at North Lakeland School and a guest teacher in the Lakeland and Green Bay areas. I also finished a certification program in reading from UW-Stevens Point in 2005.
I am currently a 7th and 8th grade special education resource teacher. I work with students that are identified as having specific learning disabilities, intellectual disabilities, emotional behavioral disabilities, other health impairments, and autism. I LOVE being a resource teacher! Building connections and positive relationships with my students, staff members, and parents is essential. I do my very best to teach math, ELA, life skills, and social thinking skills, in order to help foster students that are regulated and productive scholars, that consistently display AV-W's core values. Continuing to expand on my knowledge of Expeditionary Learning Education and putting those skills into practice is a daily goal, as well as to model and promote service and adventure opportunities. I am highly committed to the success of each of my students and being the best advocate and teacher I can be. I believe that all students are valuable, capable, and have special talents. It is my job to support, connect with, and push each one to be the best they can be. AV-W School is an extremely special place for many reasons, but the reason most near and dear to my heart is its high levels of inclusion. All learners, no matter how diverse or challenged, are embraced and supported at AV-W School. It is extraordinarily rewarding to see students make great gains in skills and overcome challenges throughout their years at AV-W School. These gains are possible thanks to all of the efforts and hard work of students, parents, staff, and the community.
Some hobbies and interests of mine include decorating, reading, walking, shopping, gardening, boating, snowshoeing, playing volleyball, taking pictures, organization of all things, traveling, and spending time with friends, family, and pets. I dream of one day going to Ireland and look forward to many more years of being a member of our amazing AV-W Crew!
