          • Read the stories and then answer three to five of these questions. YOU DO NOT NEED TO ANSWER MORE. THIS IS A DISCUSSION. Every one should contribute.

          • If everyone participates, you can work together to understand the stories. There are no points for this, but it will give you an opportunity to see what other people are thinking about the meaning of the stories.

          • After reading the book Snow Flower and The Fan, it occurred to me that this is very much what "The Lottery "addresses. This is tough to watch but it is a short digital story on Chinese footbinding (and current beauty trends in the US).

          • WRITE Paper #1: Character and Central Idea CHOOSE ONE story : 1A: " Death By Scrabble " or 1B: " Tone"

          • a paper of 300 words/3 paragraphs

          • Introduction (mention story and author's name; brief summary)

          • Analyze character. Describe main character and explain if character is static or dynamic. If character is static, explain what insight he/she fails to gain. If dynamic, explain what insight character gains (see lecture on character).

          • State theme and central idea of story. Theme of story is the general category/subject of story. Central idea is the statement this story makes on the theme (see lecture on central idea).
