EDUC 1300: Learning Framework: Effective Strategies for College Success | 16 Week Session
Required Textbook
These are ZTC (Zero Textbook Cost) courses.
The textbook is a FREE Open Educational Resource (OER).
Course Description: A study of the 1) research and theory in the psychology of learning, cognition, and motivation, 2) factors that impact learning, and 3) application of learning strategies. Theoretical models of strategic learning, cognition, and motivation serve as the conceptual basis for the introduction of college-level student academic strategies. Students use assessment instruments (e.g., learning inventories) to help them identify their own strengths and weaknesses as strategic learners. Students are ultimately expected to integrate and apply the learning skills discussed across their own academic programs and become effective and efficient learners. Students developing these skills should be able to continually draw from the theoretical models they have learned.
Course Rationale/Purpose: The purpose of this course is to provide all interested students with an opportunity to learn and adopt the knowledge, skills, motivation and behaviors that will enhance their success in learning and in life.
About this class: This is a distance-learning class where you must logon to a computer and engage in activities several times a week.
This online class is not self-paced, but faculty-guided. You have a schedule to follow with specific due dates.
Online learning means your are responsible for working independently on assignments.
For 3 hrs of college credit on a campus, you would go to class each week for 3 hrs and listen to lecture and participate in learning activities.
Then you would spend a few hours each week doing homework. In a campus-based class, you might need to spend 5-6 hrs (one hour a day) extra outside of class on assignments and reading. That would be a total of 9 hrs each week to spend on course work to earn 3 college credits.
Of course the time an individual really needs depends on skills level, background knowledge and other variables. We all have different needs!
Weekly participation in online discussions is required.
There are regular due dates and weekly participation is required.
Discussion responses are posted during the week on different days, not just the weekend.
With reading assignments and online interaction and activities, plan on at least 6 hrs (1-2 hrs a day) of study time- each week for this class, including weekdays.
We do not meet face-to-face in a classroom, but you do have to interact each week with teacher and other students via the computer.
You will have reading and other homework assignments and due dates as in a traditional classroom.
Successful students who complete this course have regular access to computer and Internet.
//An Android or iPhone or tablets are not the same as having a computer.//
Successful students who complete this course will read the textbook and write about what they learn.
To keep up with the assignments, you will need to logon, at the minimum 3 times a week, to read the instructions and post your results to the Discussion area.
Be honest asking yourself this question.
Do you have reliable access to the Internet and a Word Processor to write papers and engage in online discussion?
Are you able to visit a campus regularly if you don't own a computer or a device with a keyboard?
Will you prioritize the time to spend on reading and watching the videos for this class?
Know that you can get support from tutors and Academic Coaches.
