The New College Environmental Health Science Scholars (NCEHSS) program seeks to eliminate cultural, economic, and logistic barriers faced by underrepresented minority (URM) students seeking a summer research experience. Students are recruited from the Maricopa County region in Arizona, the nation’s fastest growing county where the population is 30% Hispanic and 3% Native American.
Through NCEHSS, students participate in paid summer research, technical training, and career guidance.

We have developed authentic research projects for all of the students in our majors in the School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences. We have included Applied Computing, Applied Math, Biology, Environmental Sciences, Forensic Science, and Statistics majors in our projects. We have developed modules to study wild bees in the Sonoran desert, capsaicin content in hot peppers, remediation of mine soils using plants, Sonoran desert microbiology research, and persistence of latent forensic evidence.
