The following policies will be enforced in all Composition courses:
1. Students will be on time; bring all materials necessary for the class period, and be ready to work when class begins.
2. Students are not allowed to eat or drink at computer stations. Anything you bring to be consumed should be placed on the editing/discussion tables. Food is generally discouraged for health and safety reasons. Inform your counselor regarding dietary regulations. Only inform your instructor of those needs which directly involve the classroom environment. Be aware that violations of this policy may disposed of at your instructor's discretion without warning if such items endanger the safety of other students or school property.
3. When you work on assignments outside the writing labs, be sure they are on your ASMSA Google drive and/or another device or "cloud." You will not be excused from class to go get "it."
4. Late work will be evaluated according to the Student Handbook policy. Be sure you read it because you will have to abide by it. For our purposes, “class days” mean days of the week on which you are attending class; therefore, something due first period Monday but turned in on Tuesday is 1 day late. Turned in on Wednesday, it’s 2 days late, etc... Also, something turned in at any time later than specified on the due date is 1 day late, so an essay due at 8 AM but turned in during lunch is one day late.
5. Students will work for the length of the class period. No one will be released from class to work elsewhere. Anyone leaving class without permission will receive an unexcused absence. Read the Student Handbook for the consequences of unexcused absences.
6. When classes goes to the library, students have 10 minutes to arrive. Students not present when their instructor arrives, will receive an unexcused absence for the class period.
7. Classed will be dismissed by individual instructors. Students may not leave the classroom when they consider themselves finished with any given assignment. Consequences for such behavior depend upon the nature, manner, and tone of the student's infraction.
8. Students are responsible for maintaining a tidy lab for themselves and peers. Remove all papers and books from computer stations, push in keyboard trays, and push in chairs before you leave.
9. Give the courses your best shot. Composition I and II are classes you must pass to remain at ASMSA. Students are emphatically encouraged to give their best efforts to improve the quality of their writing during the year and beyond.
10. Ask for help when/if you need it--that's why your instructors are in class with you! So, seize the opportunities to help yourself become a better writer.
11. E-mail, Internet access, and cell phone use are privileges, not rights. Don’t abuse the use them in the courses, lest you lose the use of your computer network account. Check the Student Handbook for consequences. Consult your instructor on his/her cell phone policy.
12. All assignments are due to your instructor in the manner in which he/she specifies at the time he/she determines. Instructors expect submissions to Turnitin.com. Instructors may also ask for paper copies and peer reviews. It is also the general policy of all Composition courses that if an essay assignment is not submitted to Turnitin.com then that assignment does not exist. E-mail, document sharing, essays slipped under or flied in some fashion on an office door are never accepted as legitimate essay submissions.
