In our classroom, we follow the "Writer's Workshop" model. We read a lot of books and learn about what good author's do. We then incorporate these ideas into our own writing. At the beginning of the year students are writing simple sentences and drawing pictures, we then progress into 3 page booklets (writing a beginning, middle and end) and first graders end the year writing 5 page stories with multiple sentences per page. Their growth really is amazing!
Trimester 1: Small moment narrative writing (writing true stories about things they have done!)
Trimester 2: Nonfiction/ information writing (writing teaching books!)
Trimester 3: Opinion writing (writing reviews on things they like and don't like, supporting their opinions with reasons!) and Fiction story series writing.
